Why Ms. Nguyet Huong was not confirmed as a National Assembly delegate?
According to the law, Vietnamese citizens have only one nationality, Vietnamese, but Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet Huong has a second nationality, the Republic of Malta.
On July 17, answering a reporter's question about why the National Election Council did not recognize Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet Huong as a National Assembly delegate, Chief of Office of the National Election Council Nguyen Hanh Phuc said that Ms. Nguyet Huong violated Article 4 of the Law on Vietnamese Nationality.
The Constitution stipulates that “Citizens of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam are people with Vietnamese nationality”, and in Article 4, the Law on Vietnamese Nationality stipulates the principle of nationality, stating that “The Socialist Republic of Vietnam recognizes Vietnamese citizens as having only one nationality, Vietnamese nationality, except in cases where this Law provides otherwise”.
“Currently, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet Huong is a Vietnamese citizen, but she has also registered for another foreign nationality. Having two nationalities is a violation of the above regulations,” Mr. Phuc said, adding that Ms. Nguyet Huong has a second nationality, the Republic of Malta.
Mr. Phuc added that the National Election Council only discovered Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet Huong's violations after the seventh session on July 15, so it had to urgently hold the eighth session on the afternoon of July 17 to consider and vote on her qualifications as a delegate to the 14th National Assembly.
Apart from the above reason why Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet Huong was not confirmed as a delegate of the 14th National Assembly, the representative of the National Election Council has not provided any other information.
