Hanh Dich Commune (Que Phong) develops rattan
(Baonghean.vn) - After a warm and cozy Tet, people in Hanh Dich commune (Que Phong) are busy with the work of a new year. People go to the fields, families go to the hills... But the most bustling atmosphere is in the rattan nursery.
Mr. Luong Tien Le - Chairman of Hanh Dich Commune People's Committee said: In November 2013, OXFARM Hong Kong in collaboration with Vietnam Crop Research Institute (VIRI) and Que Phong District People's Committee implemented a project to develop rattan and reed in Hanh Dich Commune as a source of raw materials for the export rattan and bamboo weaving industry.
The Cooperative has grown more than 130,000 plants, including 60,000 water rattan and more than 70,000 sticky rattan to give to the people in the commune to plant. During the planting process, Hanh Dich Cooperative always follows closely to guide the people on rattan planting techniques as well as monitor the growth and development of rattan plants. The area of rattan planted is now developing well. It is expected that in the rainy season of 2015, the Cooperative will continue to plant 130,000 pots equivalent to 11 hectares. Currently, the Cooperative is delivering rattan to the people and instructing them on planting and care techniques....".
After planting, if well cared for, 3 years later the rattan will be 3 meters long and ready for the first harvest, then once a year. Harvest time is from 25 to 30 years.
