According to the People's Court, prisoner Nam is serving a sentence of 19 years, 3 months, and 6 days in prison for the crimes of "Raping children", "Robbery", "Theft of property", and "Escape from prison", arrested on December 16, 2010. Prisoner Hanh is serving a sentence of 20 years, 5 months, and 9 days in prison for the crimes of "Murder", "Robbery", and "Escape from prison", arrested on April 18, 2008, (both detained in cell number 9). Prisoner Loc is serving a sentence of 15 years, 5 months, and 3 days in prison for the crimes of "Theft of property", "Resisting a person on official duty", "Escape from prison", and "Intentionally causing injury", arrested on July 29, 2010, (detained in cell number 8) at the same Sub-camp No. 1, Gia Trung Prison, General Department VIII, Ministry of Public Security.

In early December 2015, Nam had the idea of ​​escaping from prison, so he invited Hanh and Loc to join him. At the end of December 2015, while going to get rice and sunbathing, the three met and continued to discuss the escape plan. Loc said: "Digging walls, cutting bricks, sawing through iron bars is my job", then Loc instructed and gave Nam a prisoner's shirt. Nam and Hanh braided and spun fabric fibers taken from prisoner's clothes with toothpaste mixed with sand to saw through iron bars on windows.

By early January 2016, every day after dinner, Nam and Hanh took turns sawing the iron bars of cell number 9. After each sawing, they used rice and toothpaste to seal the sawing and took turns singing and tapping rhythms on the plastic box to avoid being checked and detected by the officers. By January 20, the three of them had finished sawing 5 iron bars, but because the officers checked regularly, they were unable to escape.

At about 4:00 p.m. on January 25, after receiving news that the iron bars had been sawed off, Loc asked Nam and Hanh to "take advantage of the opportunity to remove the iron bars to dig the wall." About an hour later, Hanh used the sawed iron bar (diameter 20, length 38.5cm) to make a hole in the wall measuring (40x28cm) from cell number 9 to cell number 8 for Loc to crawl through, while Nam banged on the plastic bucket and sang to make noise.

At around 8:00 p.m. the same day, Loc managed to get into cell number 9. After failing to break through the wall behind cell number 9, the three continued to try to dig up the toilet platform. After successfully breaking up the toilet platform, the subjects poured water to soften the soil and then used plastic cups and bowls to scoop the soil onto the floor. The three dug a hole about 1.2m wide, 1m deep and dug a tunnel about 3m long and about 70cm in diameter to the yard behind cell number 9 and then dug it up to the yard surface.

At about 3 o'clock on January 26, taking advantage of the rain and wind, the three of them crawled out one by one, filled the hole with dirt, and then found a way to crawl through the protective fence to escape from the detention area of ​​​​sub-camp No. 1, ran into the forest, and the fields near the camp and hid.
