Vinh City General Hospital successfully 'revived' a patient in a coma due to traumatic brain injury
(Baonghean.vn) - Recently, the Department of Trauma and Neurosurgery in collaboration with the Department of Anesthesia and Surgery and the Department of Intensive Care - Anti-Poison - Artificial Kidney, Vinh City General Hospital successfully performed surgery to save the life of a patient in a coma due to traumatic brain injury.
Mr. LVT (46 years old, in Hung Thinh, Hung Nguyen) had a traffic accident, falling off his motorbike. After nearly 2 hours, his family took him to the hospital in a comatose state, Glasgow 8 points (on the patient's perception assessment scale (from 3-15 points), 8 points is coma).
After being examined by doctors of Vinh City General Hospital and performing paraclinical tests, the patient was diagnosed with coma due to traumatic brain injury: multiple brain contusions, acute subdural hematoma in the right hemisphere due to a traffic accident; cirrhosis with blood clotting dysfunction.

The patient was indicated for craniotomy, decompression, and hematoma removal immediately after the necessary paraclinical results were available. Doctor Tran Van Tu - Department of Trauma and NeurosurgeryThe surgeon who directly performed the surgery on patient T said: “This is a difficult and emergency case; the underlying disease can potentially affect life and cause serious sequelae if surgery is not performed promptly. Therefore, the doctors promptly performed the surgery as soon as possible to save the patient's life, while minimizing serious complications later on.”

The surgery was performed by a team from the Department of Trauma and Neurosurgery, with the main surgeon being Dr. Tran Van Tu and the team in the department. The surgery was successful after 150 minutes, with timely and smooth coordination between the Department and related departments, as well as accurate prognosis of the patient's progress.
Two weeks after surgery, the patient recovered well, with weakness in the left side of his body, and was transferred to rehabilitation. After one month of rehabilitation, the patient's health improved and he was discharged from the hospital.

Eight weeks after surgery, the patient was scheduled to return to the hospital for autologous skull graft surgery. Eight days after the skull graft, the patient recovered well, the top of the head was no longer deformed but returned to normal and was discharged.
Witnessing the miraculous revival of her loved one, Ms. Ngoc (the patient's wife) tearfully shared: "My family is extremely happy and grateful to the hospital's doctors and nurses for their enthusiastic encouragement and advice on the illness, allowing the family to place their trust in the hospital for treatment. Although the family was extremely worried because my loved one's condition was very critical, thanks to the care, dedication and solid skills of the doctors and nurses, my husband was fortunate to be reborn once again."

From this case, doctors recommend that all cases of head trauma should be specifically examined at medical facilities with adequate equipment, so that the patient has a better prognosis. If surgery is indicated, early intervention is needed to avoid missing the golden time to save lives and reduce future sequelae for the patient.
