Dien Chau produces the earliest winter crop in Nghe An
(Baonghean.vn) - Currently, Dien Chau has planted 3,550 hectares of winter crops, including 2,000 hectares of corn/2,000 hectares of the plan; 800 hectares of peanuts/700 hectares of the plan; and various vegetables, tubers, and fruits. Up to now, Dien Chau is the only locality that has produced the earliest compared to the whole province.
After harvesting summer-autumn sesame, in early August, farmers in Dien Chau district went to the fields to plant winter peanuts, making it the earliest winter crop production locality in the province.
Ms. Cao Thi Thu in Hamlet 7, Dien Thanh Commune said: Last winter crop, I planted 2 sao of peanuts, got 250 kg of dried peanuts, some of which were for seeds, the rest were sold for 7 million VND, compared to growing corn, the income was 2-3 times higher. This winter crop, I planted 3 sao of peanuts, and the peanuts have now begun to sprout leaves. The reason we started early is because over the years of production, we have seen that this area rarely floods, the earlier we produce, the earlier we have time to do the spring crop.

Currently, farmers in communes with a tradition of growing winter peanuts such as Dien Hung, Dien Hoang, Dien Thanh, Dien Thinh, Dien Ky, Dien Hong, Dien An... are planting 700 hectares of winter peanuts with varieties L14, L20 and Sen Nghe An. As they sow, farmers cover the land with plastic to prevent erosion during the rainy season and protect the peanuts from the cold, and at the same time, raise the beds to prevent flooding during the rainy season.
The advantage of winter peanuts is that they are not broken by storms, so this year the district recommends that people expand the area of winter peanuts. If last year's winter crop was 650 hectares, this year the district plans to sow 700 hectares. Although it is off-season, the yield is lower than the summer crop, but the winter peanuts have good seeds, the price is almost double that of spring peanuts, so the economic value is high.
Mr. Phan Xuan Vinh - Vice Chairman of Dien Chau District People's Committee said: The whole district has planted 3,550 hectares of winter crops, of which corn is 2,000 hectares/2,000 hectares planned; peanuts are 800 hectares/700 hectares planned; vegetables, tubers and fruits of all kinds are 750 hectares/1,000 hectares planned.
