Journalist and martyr Tran Van Thong was born on March 14, 1924 in Cam Thanh commune, Cam Xuyen district (Ha Tinh town). He joined the revolution from a young age and was admitted to the Indochinese Communist Party (later the Communist Party of Vietnam) at the age of 20. After the August Revolution, he continued to join the Thai Hoa Resistance Self-Defense Team and then the main force fighting in the battlefields of Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Ngai, and Quang Nam. In 1957, he returned to Nghia Dan and was assigned to be in charge of the District Party Committee Office. After the Nghe Provincial Party Committee established the Western Steering Committee, he was transferred to work at the Western Nghe An Newspaper (later merged into the Nghe An Newspaper). On May 23, 1965, while working at the newspaper's headquarters, he was buried by an American bomb and went missing.

At the funeral ceremony, the representative of the leaders of Hoa Hieu Ward People's Committee and the representative of Nghe An Newspaper recalled the contributions that martyr and journalist Tran Van Thong had made to the revolution and to the journalism career of the province. In particular, during his years working at the Western Newspaper, he proved to be an excellent soldier on the ideological and cultural front of the Party. He was always active and devoted until the last moment to the journalism career of the province. He contributed to making the Western Nghe An Newspaper a sharp propaganda tool, promptly encouraging the ethnic minorities in the highlands of Nghe An to unite, promote economic, cultural and social development, maintain national defense and security, build a strong Party organization, government and mass organizations, mobilize human and material resources to support the revolution to liberate the South, and protect the great rear of the North.
