Heavy rain causes heavy damage in the 'vegetable barn' of Quynh Luu
In recent days, due to the impact of heavy rain, many vegetable areas in Minh Luong commune, Quynh Luu district, known as the largest "vegetable granary" in the province, have been flooded and severely damaged.
In particular, bok choy and scallions were the two vegetables that suffered the most damage, greatly affecting the economy of local farmers.
At Minh Luong commune's vegetable fields, many onion fields that were in the preparation stage for harvest were flooded, the plants withered and rotted.

Ms. Tran Thi Lan, a farmer in Hamlet 2, said: “My family planted 4 sao of green onions, which are now more than a month old. However, more than 3 sao were flooded and severely damaged, and had to be demolished to replant. Preliminary calculations show that the damage is up to tens of millions of dong from the cost of seeds, fertilizers and care.”
In the same situation, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lam - another household in Minh Luong commune is trying to collect onions that can still be sold. She said: "My family has 2 sao of onions that are ready to be harvested, but heavy rain has damaged nearly 400 kg of onions, reducing the yield by half. The onions are flooded, making it very difficult to sell, the price is only about 5,000 VND/kg, few people buy."
In the vegetable fields, many areas of green onions - the local staple crop, at different stages from newly planted to about to be harvested were flooded and damaged, forcing people to destroy them and replant from the beginning.
Not only green onions, but also Chinese cabbage was seriously affected. Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai, another farmer in the area, said: “The heavy rain caused the water to not drain quickly, so the vegetables were flooded. When the sun came out, the Chinese cabbage quickly rotted and could not be harvested in time for sale. The economic damage was huge. The only solution now is to plow it up and plant new ones.”
Mr. Ho Anh Dung - Chairman of Minh Luong Commune People's Committee said: "Minh Luong is a coastal commune, located in the coastal area, specializing in the largest vegetable cultivation in the province with more than 400 hectares of cultivated area. Heavy rains lasting for more than 10 days have severely damaged more than 40 hectares of green onions and Chinese cabbage, causing significant economic losses.
In the immediate future, the commune is directing farmers to harvest areas that can be utilized to reduce damage as well as to replant damaged vegetable areas. In the long term, Minh Luong commune needs to upgrade the drainage system to protect production and create favorable conditions for people to feel secure in farming.
