Norway supports Nghe An in responding to natural disasters

(Baonghean.vn) - On the afternoon of October 9, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society coordinated with the Nghe An Provincial Red Cross Society to organize a Workshop on the Implementation of the Project "Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction".

Attending the workshop were Mr. Gideon Tesfai - Coordinator in charge of Asia - Pacific, Norwegian Red Cross; Comrade Dang Minh Chau, Deputy General Secretary of Vietnam Red Cross.

On the side of Nghe An province, there were comrade Hoang Viet Duong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, representatives of the Provincial Red Cross Society and related departments, branches and sectors, and representatives of districts benefiting from the project.

The project “Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction” funded by the Norwegian Red Cross aims to improve response capacity and reduce damage caused by natural disasters and catastrophes to communities in communes with high poverty rates and vulnerable households when natural disasters occur. In Nghe An province, the project will be implemented in communes that often experience flooding and where people's lives are still difficult, namely Hung Nhan (Hung Nguyen), Nam Cuong (Nam Dan) and Thanh Xuan (Thanh Chuong).

Mr. Dang Minh Chau - Deputy General Secretary of the Vietnam Red Cross Society hopes that the project will improve the ability to respond and minimize damage caused by natural disasters and catastrophes to the community.

The project includes the following contents: improving the capacity of Red Cross officials at all levels and commune-level authorities to better support residential areas against the impacts of climate change; equipping people with knowledge, skills and supporting facilities to prepare them to respond to natural disasters such as: rescue boats, building community houses to avoid floods, building degraded bridges, etc.

Comrade Hoang Viet Duong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee noted that localities need to pay attention and participate so that the project can be implemented with the best results.

The project will be implemented from now until 2017, with a total estimated budget of nearly 16 billion VND; about 33,000 people from 17 high-risk communes in the three provinces of Nghe An, Ha Giang and Lao Cai will benefit from the project.

Previously, from 2010 to 2014, the project "Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction" phase 1 was implemented in 3 provinces of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Lao Cai; about 100,000 people have benefited from the project's activities.
