The owner of the money is Mr. Kha Van Thin (born in 1988), residing in Xop Thap village (Huu Lap commune, Ky Son district). Mr. Thin said that his family has lived in this stilt house for 4 generations. A few years ago, he was cleaning the house to find some documents for the frontline labor regime for his grandfather, Kha Xieng Pha (who passed away in 1999), when he discovered a wooden chest in the bedroom. This was the chest that Mr. Pha kept hidden to store important items.

The chest had been eaten by termites and was almost completely destroyed. The only thing left in the chest was a wallet containing a stack of money tied tightly with a parachute cord. Counting, there were a total of nearly 140 bills, mostly 1-cent and 2-cent bills, and a few 1-dong bills. The bills were all brand new and unwrinkled.

The 1-hao and 2-hao bills were issued in 1958, and the 1-dong bill was issued in 1976. Mr. Thin added: “Some visitors found them beautiful and asked to keep them as souvenirs, so I gave away some of them, and now there are only 125 left. These are considered souvenirs left by my grandfather and we have no intention of selling or exchanging them.”
