Nghe An: Lemon prices double at the beginning of the dry season

(Baonghean.vn) - In hot weather, many people have chosen lemons to quench their thirst, so the price of off-season lemons has increased. From 17,000 VND/kg a month ago, the price of lemons has now increased to 35,000 VND/kg.

Off-season lemon prices have increased.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang, hamlet 1, Hung Yen Nam commune, has 100 lemon trees. This year's off-season lemon season, she harvested 500 kg of fruit. She does not harvest her lemons at once to sell to traders, but she harvests 40-50 kg each day and brings them to Vinh Station market to sell for extra income. When all the lemons are sold, her family continues to buy lemons from lemon growers in the hamlet to sell for profit. Every day, selling 40-50 kg of lemons, Ms. Hang earns a profit of 200,000-250,000 VND.

Ms. Tran Thi Xuan, Hamlet 3B, Hung Yen Bac Commune, also goes to the lemon gardens of households in the hamlet every day to buy 30-40 kg of lemons to sell at Vinh market, earning nearly 5 million VND in profit each month. "Our two communes, Hung Yen Bac and Hung Yen Nam, have a lot of lemons. Both communes have about a dozen households specializing in wholesale lemon purchasing, transporting them by car to Hanoi and Hai Phong, consuming hundreds of tons of lemons every day," said Ms. Xuan.

Lemon has many uses

In Hung Nguyen district, there are nearly 400 hectares of lemons, concentrated in Hung Yen Nam, Hung Yen Bac communes and part of Hung Trung commune. This year's off-season lemon crop is good, farmers have harvested thousands of tons of lemons. At the beginning of the season, the price of lemons was 17,000 VND/kg (17 million VND/ton) in the garden, but now the price has nearly doubled due to the hot weather. Thanks to that, lemon growers have more income.

“Currently, in Hung Yen Bac, there are about 20 tons of lemons. At the end of the season, lemons are expensive, traders come to buy them at the garden for 30,000 VND/kg. They buy all the lemons they have, the closer to the end of the season, the more expensive the lemons are. Thanks to the off-season lemon trees, hundreds of households in Hung Yen have an income of hundreds of millions of VND. In Hung Yen, Hung Nguyen district, there is no crop that can withstand drought well and bring high economic efficiency like lemon trees” - Mr. Hoang Duc Chuyen - Chairman of the Hung Yen Bac Farmers' Association said.

Lemon is a fruit that contains a lot of vitamin C, which has the effect of increasing resistance and cooling the body, so many people choose to use it on hot days. "I usually buy 1-2 kg to keep in the refrigerator and use gradually. Lemon can be used to make dipping sauce, put in spinach juice and to quench thirst."

In hot weather, people's demand for lemons to cool down increases, leading to high prices for off-season lemons. When lemon prices increase, lemon growers have more income and lemon traders also benefit, further affirming the position of off-season lemons in Hung Nguyen, Nam Dan.
