Yen Thanh farmers grow new high-yielding milkweed varieties
(Baonghean.vn) - A farmer in Yen Thanh district has brought tall and dwarf milkweed varieties from abroad to plant for several years now, showing high productivity and high nutritional value. In addition to serving as animal feed, they also use the cuttings to sell seeds.
Coming to the garden of Ms. Ha Thi Nhan's family in hamlet 4, Minh Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district, it shows that, in addition to a few fruit trees, there are manyEuphorbialush green. Through research, Ms. Nhan said that this is a new type of milkweed, grown for the first time on this land. It is the tall milkweed NLT 01 Thailand and the dwarf milkweed Taiwan.

According to Ms. Nhan, after 3 years of bringing the breed here for trial planting, it has been shown that both types of grass are easy to grow, grow quickly, and have high yields of 250 to 300 tons/ha/year; the stems and leaves are soft, crunchy, and nutritious, so livestock: buffaloes, cows, goats, rabbits... love to eat them.
Every year, with more than 0.5 hectares of garden land, Ms. Nhan grows both types of milkweed, in addition to providing a local food source for her herd.petsIn addition to her family's products, she also sells cuttings to customers from many provinces across the country.

"The dwarf milkweed variety is about 80 cm tall, the tall milkweed variety is 2.5 - 3 m tall, both grow quickly and yield higher yields than previously grown grasses. After harvesting, the leaves are used for livestock, the stems are used for cuttings, so the family is ready to provide seeds for any household that wants to grow them. In fact, in the past, many customers from other localities across the country have known and asked to buy them, the family has sent them to customers," Ms. Nhan shared.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Huong - Director of Yen Thanh District Agricultural Service Center said that for a long time, farmers in the district mainly planted VA06 elephant grass, while tall milkweed NLT01 (Thailand) and dwarf milkweed (Taiwan) are being planted at households in Minh Thanh commune, which is only now heard of, and has not been widely planted.
Mr. Nguyen The Thang - Chairman of Nghe An Gardening Association said: Both of these grass varieties have just entered Vietnam 2 years ago, so in Nghe An, apart from the above model, they have not been grown anywhere. Through research, it is shown that both of these grass varieties have 3 advantages: They can adapt to many different types of soil; give high yield and soft stems and leaves with lots of water, so the nutrients will be high.
"The family in Minh Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district growing these two types of grass is a budding model in Nghe An that needs to be replicated, possibly replacing previous types of grass to make a better source of food for livestock," said Mr. Nguyen The Thang.
