Brave prisoner saves drowning child in deep lake

“Our family is extremely lucky to have received help from Mr. Pham Dinh Duan, an inmate at Thanh Lam Prison. He has given our family another life… If he had not been there to save us in time, my family could not imagine how great the pain and loss would have been…” – That is part of the content of the thank you letter from Ms. Vu Thi Tuyet in My Re village, Yen Le commune, Nhu Xuan district, Thanh Hoa to Thanh Lam Prison and inmate Pham Dinh Duan for saving her son, Le Dinh Chung, 8 years old, who drowned while swimming in a lake in Yen Phu village, Yen Le commune, Nhu Xuan.

That day, at around 3:45 p.m. while working, he saw Le Dinh Chung and his friends drowning while swimming in the lake. Without hesitation, Mr. Duẩn jumped into the lake to save the child.

However, due to the deep water, after the third dive, Mr. Duẩn was able to grab the child's hand and bring him to shore, at which point Chung was unconscious.

After receiving first aid, the prison officers, local authorities and family quickly took the child to Nhu Xuan District Hospital. After examination, the doctor requested a transfer because there was a lot of water in the lungs. The child was then transferred to Thanh Hoa Provincial Hospital for emergency treatment.

After nearly three days in a special isolation room, Chung regained consciousness, and after eight days of treatment, Chung's health gradually recovered.

After Chung was discharged from the hospital and returned home, in the joy and great happiness that their child was saved by a prisoner serving a prison sentence, the family representative and the local government went to the unit to thank the leaders of Thanh Lam Prison, and directly went to Production Area No. 1 to thank the staff, as well as meet prisoner Duan to express their gratitude to the person who directly saved their child's life. At the same time, they wrote a letter of thanks to Thanh Lam Prison for educating prisoners to do useful things for society.

It is known that prisoner Pham Dinh Duan, 23 years old, residing in Hop Tien, Nam Sach, Hai Duong; committed the crime of Illegal drug trafficking; arrested on: October 1, 2015; sentence: 2 years and 6 months. Currently doing reformatory labor at Team 4, Production Area No. 1, located in Yen Phu Village, Yen Le Commune, Nhu Xuan District, Thanh Hoa Province.

Colonel Phan Ngoc Viet, Warden of Thanh Lam Prison, has decided to give an unexpected reward to prisoner Pham Dinh Duan, and will propose a sentence reduction or amnesty for prisoners who have made achievements during their sentence when they have met the time and standards prescribed by law.
