(Baonghean.vn) - Herniated disc is a relatively common disease and tends to get younger, due to the influence of modern lifestyle. Recently, a 30-year-old male patient was successfully treated for lumbar disc herniation by microsurgical decompression surgery at Vinh International Hospital.

Two years ago, patient NVH, born in 1989 in Thanh Khe commune, Thanh Chuong district, Nghe An province, experienced severe pain in the lumbar spine area spreading down to the outside of the left leg, causing numbness and discomfort. The patient was treated with physical therapy for a while, but recently the pain recurred, making it difficult for the patient to move around and perform daily activities.

On August 13, 2019, the patient was admitted to Vinh International Hospital for clinical examination, spinal X-ray, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Doctors concluded that the patient had a herniated disc in the lumbar spine L4/5, compressing the left root more than the right, and indicated surgery to decompress L4/5.

The decompression surgery using microsurgery, with the support of a C-arm (X-ray machine in the operating room), was performed by Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Le Bao Tien - Director of the Institute of Orthopedics and Trauma, Deputy Head of the Department of Spinal Surgery, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.

The surgery was successful after 90 minutes with a small, minimally invasive incision. After 2-3 days when the patient's condition is stable, the patient is encouraged to move early after surgery; can change position in place and sit up to move.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Le Bao Tien said:“Disc herniation is a relatively common disease and tends to get younger due to modern social lifestyle. When disc herniation does not cause spinal instability, patients are often prescribed medical treatment; if not successful, patients are prescribed surgery to release the compressed nerves and remove the herniated disc. The success rate after surgery depends on different techniques. If using a magnifying glass or a microsurgical lens, the success rate is very high, reaching 95% in the early stages.”

Currently, many patients still have a subjective mentality and do not persevere in treating the disease, causing the disease to become more and more severe. The degenerated disc becomes hard, brittle, or even ruptures, losing the ability to recover.

Therefore, as soon as there is pain and numbness in the inner buttocks and outer calves or in the front of the thighs, knees and feet or in the neck - shoulder - nape area, the patient needs to go to a medical facility with a neurosurgery department for timely examination and treatment; to avoid serious complications that cannot be recovered.

In order to provide high-quality medical examination and treatment opportunities, excellent health care services while saving costs for people in Nghe An, Ha Tinh provinces and neighboring areas, without having to go to the Central level, Vinh International Hospital has comprehensive professional cooperation with Viet Duc Friendship Hospital - one of the largest surgical centers in Vietnam, implementing the program "Surgery with Professors, Doctors, and Doctors of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital".
