(Baonghean.vn) - Many areas of important protective acacia forests at the source of Vuc Mau Lake, Tan Thang Commune, Quynh Luu District have long been cut down by people to switch to pineapple cultivation, but the authorities have not yet had a solution to prevent it.

The protective forest area in Tan Thang commune, Quynh Luu district helps regulate water levels and prevent erosion for Vuc Mau lake, but is being cut down and burned by people to grow pineapples. Before 2010, these protective forest areas were assigned to households for care and protection, but these households themselves cut down the trees. (In the photo: After cutting down the forest, the tree stumps were dug up). Photo: Van Truong

According to the report of the Northern Nghe An Forest Protection Management Board: In 2018, Tan Thang commune had 4 households cutting down nearly 10 hectares of protective forest to convert to pineapple cultivation. The destruction of protective forests in the area shows the weakness and irresponsibility of local authorities at all levels. The authorities need to investigate and clarify the violators of deforestation to strictly handle them before the law.
