Le Minh Hieu's father works in the journalism industry and his mother is an elementary school teacher. Because his father works in Thai Hoa ward and is often away from home, in middle school, he studied at Quynh Hau Middle School near his home for convenience. This male student also admitted that his academic performance in middle school was quite modest, with only an Encouragement Prize in Physics in the Provincial Excellent Student Competition.

In grade 9, Hieu registered for the Physics specialized class at Phan Boi Chau High School but failed. After that, although he studied at Quynh Luu 1 High School, in the middle of the first semester, when Phan Boi Chau organized a supplementary entrance exam, Hieu registered for the exam again but failed again. Talking about this, Hieu said: I only did about 50% of the requirements set out. Therefore, when I failed this exam, I was not sad but really worried because I saw that my knowledge was still limited compared to my friends. If I did not try hard to improve, I would be inferior to my friends.

After this “turning point”, Hieu really changed and focused more time on studying. Grade 11, after passingexcellent studentsHieu took the initiative to apply to join the gifted student team, even though he knew that this was really difficult: Physics is a subject he had a foundation in since middle school, so he was quite confident in himself. However, Math is a subject he would have to invest a lot in because his starting point was still slow compared to the other members. At first, when they knew he chose 2 subjects, the teachers did not support him much because they wanted him to focus on one subject to achieve high results. The teacher also told him that winning one first prize was better than two second prizes.

Although he knew there were many difficulties, when he received advice from his teachers, Hieu remained silent. Instead, he responded by making progress every day. Talking more about the review process, Hieu said: In addition to studying the knowledge in textbooks, I really like to do difficult math problems and practice my thinking skills when doing exercises. If I encounter a situation where I cannot solve it, instead of looking at the answer, I will try to come up with many different solutions and will write down each solution to find the most optimal solution. There were difficult math problems that took me nearly 3 hours to complete.

Conquer exam season

Coming to the Provincial Excellent Student Exam, Hieu set high goals for himself in both subjects with the desire to get a "predetermined" prize. After completing the Math exam, Hieu said that he basically did well because in the multiple choice part, he almost got a perfect score and in the essay part, although the questions were quite long, Hieu was confident in his results. Meanwhile, in the Physics exam, although he did not spend much time studying, Hieu did quite well, even on difficult exercises. After the exam, Hieu gave the exam scores close to the actual results, but he still did not believe that he won first prize in both subjects with very high scores, in which Math scored 16.5/20 points and Physics 18.5/20 points. In which, Math was the joint valedictorian and Physics was in the top 3 in the province. This is also the candidate with the highest results in this year's Provincial Excellent Student Exam.

Talking about Hieu, teacher Tran Ngoc Minh - head of the Math team of Quynh Luu 1 High School added: In addition to independent thinking, critical thinking, and intelligence, I appreciate Hieu's ability to self-study. At the final stage, because he had to take two exams at the same time, I was quite worried, but Hieu arranged his study schedule quite scientifically and he always tried his best to complete all the exercises that his teachers required.

I was really surprised with the achievements I had made and the teachers were the ones who accompanied and helped me a lot. In the early days of exam preparation, my Math teacher was always strict with me because he wanted me to overcome my own challenges. My Physics teacher always encouraged, motivated and believed in me even though I didn't spend much time on this subject.

Hieu's results also brought outstanding achievements to the Math team - Quynh Luu 1 High School with 2 first prizes, 4 second prizes, 1 third prize and 2 consolation prizes (achieving 100%).

To achieve this excellent result, teacher Tran Ngoc Minh added: Since grade 10, Math teachers have begun to form the team and then, we always follow the students closely, forming their self-study awareness. During the review process, we will divide them into two levels, the safe level and the competitive level (including students who are capable of winning first and second prizes) to review according to their abilities. As for the teachers, this is the second year of implementing the Excellent Student Exam according to the new Program, so they have begun to get acquainted and have a source of quite high-quality exam preparation questions. However, with the open nature of this exam, we also guide students to know how to develop questions to do, especially with application and high-application questions.
