With 3 first prizes, 6 second prizes, including 1 valedictorian, Quynh Luu 1 High School (Quynh Luu commune) firmly holds the first position in the province at this year's 12th grade Excellent Student Competition. However, few people know that the journey to this success started with hardship and behind it is the tireless determination of both teachers and students.

The only female valedictorian in Chemistry

With 18.5 points, Chu Quynh Thuong (12A1) was the only valedictorian in Chemistry at the Provincial Excellent Student Exam. Sharing about this year's exam, Thuong said that the exam consists of 12 multiple choice questions, 50 minutes to complete, and an essay question, 100 minutes to complete. Although the structure has not changed, when receiving the exam, Thuong was quite worried because her first impression was that it was more difficult than the ones she had tried. There were some tricky questions, although the knowledge was in the curriculum, requiring flexible thinking to be able to answer.

To get a high score, Thuong said that she had to take advantage of 150 minutes to do the test. In the multiple choice section, her way of doing the test was to skim through the questions, trying to do it as quickly as possible. If she encountered a difficult question and could not give the correct answer, she would skip it to do the next questions. At the end of the test, if she had time left, she would go back and do the blank questions. Essay writing is her strength, so Thuong did the test more comfortably and solved each question in turn: "After finishing the test, talking with my friends and the teacher, I knew that I had answered wrongly, losing points mainly in the multiple choice section. However, in terms of the overall test, I still hoped that I would get a high score. But the result of winning first prize, the top scorer in the province, really surprised me and made me burst with joy and happiness," the female student shared.

Chu Quynh Thuong was born into a poor family. Her mother worked as a factory worker and her father was also a freelancer. When Thuong was in 6th grade, to have money to support her family and raise her children, her father decided to go to Japan to work. Since then, her family's economy has been less difficult, but in return, Thuong and her siblings had to spend years away from their father. "It has been 6 years since my father went to work abroad and he has only come home to visit twice. He lives far away but often asks about the children's studies at home. This is also the motivation for me to try hard, achieve good results and share with my father, helping him feel happy and proud during his hard working time abroad," Quynh Thuong confided.

It is known that in the Chemistry team, Thuong is the one with the most background, when she won the second prize for excellent students in the province in grade 9. After entering high school, she also made an impression on teachers with her intelligence, diligence, and neatness. Teacher Hoang Thi Nguyet, the training teacher and homeroom teacher added:

During the training process, I always had confidence and trust in Thuong, because she always maintained a stable performance and high learning awareness. The student's results also made me feel very happy, proud and worthy of her efforts throughout the past time.

Breakthrough effort

In addition to Quynh Thuong, Nguyen Thi Tuyen, a student of class 12A01, also won first prize - and was the runner-up in the province in Chemistry with 18.25 points. This achievement is a spectacular breakthrough for the poor student, who had no background in Chemistry when she was in middle school. Tuyen's house is in Quynh Son commune, nearly 10km from the school, and her family is considered near-poor. Born into a single-parent family, her mother raised Tuyen and her older sister alone.

During her junior high school years, Tuyet studied at a village school. Her academic performance was good but not outstanding enough to compete in the excellent student competition. Due to her family's difficult circumstances, she did not have the opportunity to take extra classes, but mainly relied on teachers at school and self-study. When she enteredQuynh Luu 1 High School, I registered for class A01 with the orientation of combining Math, Physics, and English for university admission. I came to Chemistry by chance when I was discovered by teacher Nguyet, encouraged and given resources to nurture and build a team of excellent students.

Speaking about her students, Ms. Nguyet said that when she participated in the school's excellent student competition, Tuyen was only in the bottom group. However, she is a student with intelligent qualities, learns lessons very quickly, and does her homework carefully. Moreover, Tuyen also has a humble personality, a spirit of learning, and a high desire to learn. Therefore, although she came to Chemistry later than her friends and had to interrupt it because she had to have surgery in the summer of grade 11, after a period of reviewing for the competency test, Tuyen made clear progress, from the bottom group to the top of the team.

Tuyen's first prize was already within the teacher and student's hopes, but she was the one who seized the opportunity, promoted her ability at the decisive moment to realize the goal.

Meanwhile, Phan Trung Long (class 12A1) had an impressive comeback. In grade 9, he participated in the provincial Chemistry competition but did not win any prizes. The shock of failing the exam made the male student sad and disappointed, but he also realized that he did not have a solid and solid knowledge foundation. In high school, he continued to pursue Chemistry with more diligence and effort.

His family's circumstances are difficult, his mother is a farmer, his father is a construction worker, and he had a work accident, which affected his health. Loving his parents, he only knows how to strive to excel in his studies. The provincial excellent student exam in grade 12 is also an opportunity for the male student to start over and stand up after his failure in grade 9. "This time, I prepared more carefully, was confident in my knowledge, and I was very happy to win first prize. This result really surpassed my original goal," the male student said.

Sharing about the process of accompanying students during this year's exam season, Ms. Nguyet said that this was the second time she was in charge of training the provincial exam team. Therefore, she also had more experience in the process of searching, discovering, and creating a source of excellent students. However, because the Chemistry team only had one teacher in charge, during the review process, she herself told herself to try harder, spend more time training, searching for documents, and building a source of mock exams to provide to students.

Speaking more about this year's exam, Ms. Nguyet also confided that according to the regulations of the Department of Education and Training, for non-specialized high schools, depending on the size of the student body, schools will be allowed to send from 1 to 7 candidates to compete/subject. However, when finalizing the team, Ms. Nguyet still did not have the heart to leave out any students because she believed in the ability and desire of the students. To create opportunities for the students, she asked the school's permission to report to the Department to send 9 candidates to compete in the Chemistry subject. And the determination and efforts of the students have brought sweet results with 100% of the students achieving high scores and rising to the first place in the province in this year's exam season./.
