Before that, at 11pm on September 7, the District 9 Police on duty received a report from a man saying that he was attacked by two people with weapons, with the intention of robbing him. The victim was Mr. Nguyen Ba T. (41 years old, from Dong Nai).
Mr. T. stated that a few dozen minutes earlier, he had been driving a motorbike from Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Nai. When he arrived at the Rach Chiec traffic checkpoint on Hanoi Highway, Tan Phu Ward, District 9, he stopped to put on a raincoat when two men rushed up to him, attacked him with weapons, injured him, and then stole his motorbike.
During the investigation, the police assessed that there was not enough basis to determine that this was a case of slashing and car robbery, and that there were many details that were not as Mr. T. had stated.
Finally, Mr. T. admitted that he was slashed by his lover's biological son when he was trying to take her away. After investigation, the police went to the Eastern Military Hospital in District 9 and invited Hieu, the suspect in the incident, to work with him. Hieu admitted that he slashed Mr. T. because he was angry about his relationship with his mother, not because he wanted to rob him of his property.

Recently, Hieu suspected his mother, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Th. (48 years old, living at the same address) of having a relationship with a strange man. On the evening of September 7, Mrs. Th. went out and Hieu followed her.
When he discovered Mr. T. stopped his car at Rach Chiec traffic checkpoint carrying Mrs. Th., Hieu used a meat cleaver he had prepared to attack, slashing Mr. T. twice, causing a severed tendon in his right hand. At this time, Hieu also accidentally injured his mother's hand.
Seeing his mother injured, Hieu took Mr. T's car to take his mother to the emergency room. Afterwards, the police came to the hospital to ask Hieu to come in for questioning.
