Thai Hoa: 'Acting in trashy movies with high pay but the audience turns their backs'

Thai Hoa confided that in the past, when he was poor, he blindly jumped into things, but now that he has enough to eat and wear, he limits acting in bad movies so that his "resume" will be decent enough to raise his two children.

Appearing with a simple appearance, Thai Hoa’s answer was also sincere and rustic. The failure of "Crazy Fan" does not affect "Teo Em 2"

- After “Crazy Fan”, Thai Hoa returned to his forte of comedy in “Saigon Bodyguard”. Was this a spontaneous or calculated choice?

- There is no arrangement or calculation here. I am always ready for Chanh Phuong's film. Kim Ly convinced me to accept this project.

He showed determination and desire to make a thoroughly entertaining action movie. Moreover, the film crew was very professional, so why wouldn't I accept?

- Many people think that the box office failure of “Fan cuong” has affected the project “Teo Em 2” that you and Charlie Nguyen had been working on before. What do you say about this?

- That is a temporary project, currently the script is still being revised. If the script is finished, everything goes smoothly, and there are no unexpected events, then hopefully the film will start filming after Tet. Crazy fans will not affect the Teo Em 2 project. Because the budget to make the film is very high. I am not saying that the producer is rich, but now people see the film market developing so they want to invest in it.

Furthermore, the movie Teo Em is also loved by the audience and is expected to release part 2. Investors see the appeal of the movie, so the issue of whether the movie will start filming soon or late has nothing to do with money.

- Until now, the audience still assumes that Thai Hoa must act in comedy films. Do you think it's because the fans are too conservative?

- I don't think it's because the audience is conservative, it's true that they are used to seeing me in comedy films. But if Fan cuong was made more professionally, I could still win over the audience in other roles. It's just more difficult, not that I can't do it. I think this fault lies with the crew, actors and director who haven't done it properly.

Actually, I didn’t have to wait until Fan cuong to change. Before that, there were movies like Buddha’s Fire, Marrying Someone, those two roles didn’t bring laughter. All actors like to play many different types of roles, I am one of them. I still have to try to find opportunities, and if I can’t be an actor now, I can be a director.

- So how are you preparing to change direction?

- I've been preparing for a few years now, I've also come up with ideas for some films and asked someone to write the scripts based on my ideas. I can act or direct those films and I can also play several roles at the same time. Everything is in the preparation process.

In the past, poor people had to close their eyes and jump in.

- While young rising artists are trying to "sell" movies based on their names, Thai Hoa, despite being known as the "King of the Box Office", modestly acts in one movie a year. Why is that?

- I'm also afraid that I'll be too greedy, making too many random movies and in the end not having a role that's well-invested. Second, I'm afraid that the audience will get bored. I know that all actors go through a period of decline, but I don't want to be forgotten that way.

In the past, I was poor so I tried to do anything. Now, although I am not rich, I have enough to eat and wear, and I have less financial pressure. My movies and roles are just there, and after 5 or 10 years, I will look back and see them as a resume. But I want my resume to be clean.

Besides making films and discovering myself so that I have a purpose in life and direction, I also have to make my relatives proud, including my father and two children. My father has passed away, but when he was alive, he was very strict with me. I choose films and roles properly to teach my two children.

- Many people said it was too difficult to invite Thai Hoa, because you only work with foreign crews. How did you react to this information?

- That's partly true. I'm not the type of actor who charges sky-high prices, but when I accept a script, I do care about the salary. But the most important thing I think about is the production team, then the script and the director.

Because if the crew is good, the director will definitely be good, and a good director will not let the script be loose and will not choose actors who are not suitable for the role or superficial people.

- This year, Vietnamese films have exploded in quantity, but their quality has continuously caused viewers to complain. How concerned are you about the domestic market?

- There were many movies released this year, all of them had stars, but all of them were chaotic and did not create any impact on the audience. These movies were filmed roughly, intentionally trying to put comedy into the characters but it did not fit the situation, most of them were stage comedies.

Maybe the audience won't turn their backs immediately, but over time they will realize this is not a movie, because only movies have the power to attract.

That’s what I’m worried about, even many people who don’t know what a movie is are spending money to make a movie. They just think that if they have a popular actor, they can make a movie without thinking that a good movie requires proper preparation and investment from the crew, script, director, actors…
