We arrived at Hoa Hieu 2 Secondary School in Thai Hoa town just as the school was holding an extracurricular activity on traffic safety for its students. A large number of students were educated about road traffic safety laws, learned about various traffic signs, and gained insight into the current traffic safety situation in the country, the province, and the local area. They also participated in a Q&A session related to traffic safety.
Phan Quynh Nga, a student in class 8A at Hoa Hieu 2 Secondary School, said: “Thanks to extracurricular activities on traffic safety and the teachers' frequent presence at the school gate to remind us, we are always aware that obeying traffic safety laws is our responsibility, our duty, and also ensures our own safety.”
Organize students to sign a pledge to strictly abide by the law.
Recently, to further improve the education of discipline, conduct, and awareness of traffic laws among students, and to contribute to reducing traffic congestion in front of schools or on roads near schools during peak hours, the model of "a school free from crime and social vices, with students adhering well to traffic culture" was registered as a pilot project by the principals of Hoa Hieu 1 and Hoa Hieu 2 Secondary Schools in Thai Hoa town.
Weekly, through flag-raising ceremonies, extracurricular activities, and civics education classes, the school will integrate the dissemination of the Road Traffic Law to raise students' awareness and encourage them to participate in traffic in an orderly manner, avoid large gatherings, stay in their lanes, ensure traffic safety, and minimize accidents. The school will also organize a "Smart Traffic" online competition for students, and provide a crime reporting mailbox within the school grounds to encourage students to participate in crime prevention, detection, and reporting of traffic safety violations. Simultaneously, students will sign pledges to strictly abide by the law, refrain from social vices, protect school property, not operate motorcycles or scooters before reaching the legal age, wear helmets when riding motorcycles, scooters, or electric bicycles, and strictly adhere to traffic rules.
Ms. Duong Thu Oanh, Principal of Hoa Hieu 2 Secondary School in Thai Hoa Town, said: “During the implementation of the model, the school closely coordinated with families, local authorities, and the ward police force to regularly maintain propaganda and education, inspect and manage, and take measures to handle students who violate traffic regulations during and outside school hours, thereby encouraging them to voluntarily comply with the law.”
For this model to be effective and for compliance with traffic safety regulations to become a habit, along with the decisive involvement of schools, police forces, and youth organizations, the cooperation of parents and the self-awareness of students are essential. This will contribute to the formation of their character during their time in school.
