(Baonghean.vn) - With the advantages of delicious fruit, quick harvest, favorable selling price and output market, many farmers in the mountainous district of Con Cuong are choosing Taiwanese pear guava trees to replace ineffective crops. This is a good sign in the transformation of crop structure in Con Cuong district.

As one of the first people to bring Taiwanese guava to plant in the area, Mr. Bui Anh Dung in village 2/9, Bong Khe commune said: In 2014, realizing that guava is an easy-to-grow tree and suitable for the soil, and the market is favorable, I went directly to gardens in the West to buy 200 Taiwanese guava seedlings to plant on 1,800 m2home land

Mr. Dung added: Previously, on this land area, he planted many types of trees but they were not effective, but Taiwanese guava is very easy to grow, low cost, easy to care for and less susceptible to pests and diseases. Thanks to his extensive experience in gardening and active application of new scientific and technical measures in cultivation, the guava trees grow well.

Currently, Mr. Dung's 200 Taiwanese guava trees are in the third year of harvest, with 4 harvests per month, averaging 2 - 4 quintals per harvest; with the current selling price of 10,000 - 12,000 VND/kg, the profit after deducting costs is 8 - 10 million VND/month.

However, according to Mr. Dung, to produce high-yield fruit, the tree must be pinched to limit the growth of branches and leaves, concentrating nutrients on the fruit. When the fruit is as big as a thumb, a specialized bag must be used to cover the fruit. Thanks to the application of plastic bag wrapping techniques, from flowering to ripening, no pesticides must be used, which both protects the health of the grower and is safe for the user.

To meet the demand for seedlings for people, Mr. Dung also sells seedlings and enthusiastically guides on how to plant them effectively.

From Mr. Dung's model, there are now many households growing guava effectively. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoang's household in village 2/9 planted 100 experimental seedlings. Currently, Mrs. Hoang's family's guava garden has yielded the first harvest.

Ms. Hoang shared that, unlike many other fruit trees, the time from planting to harvest takes several years, this Taiwanese guava variety only takes more than 6 months, the fruit set rate and yield are high, harvested year-round, if farmers diligently take care of it properly, it will bring high economic efficiency. With this fortune-telling season, Ms. Hoang estimated to harvest more than 300 kg, after deducting expenses, she earned about 3 million VND.

Currently, there are some households successfully growing Taiwanese pear guava in Tra Lan area and all households want to pay attention to guava trees, trace their origin to increase product value so that people can develop this fruit variety more strongly.
