40 years ago, in Vinh city, the Nghe Tinh Ethnic Minority Youth School - the predecessor of Nghe An Ethnic Minority Boarding High School was established. Since then, students and children of ethnic minorities in Nghe An have had a common home to return to. There, they can study, grow up, and be loved in the arms of teachers...

In the early 80s of the last century, after two great resistance wars to save the country, our country was completely independent and unified. However, this was also the time when the whole country in general, Nghe Tinh in particular, had to face many difficulties of the post-war and subsidy period.

In such a context, it is special that the leaders of Nghe Tinh province have a policy of establishing a high school exclusively for children of ethnic minorities.

Accordingly, on December 4, 1982, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision No. 1314/QD-UB officially establishing "Nghe Tinh Highland Ethnic Youth School" - the predecessor of the current Nghe An Ethnic Boarding High School.

This was the first provincial-level boarding high school model for ethnic minorities in Nghe Tinh province at that time, although the type of highland schools and general labor schools had existed in some mountainous districts in previous years.

The school was established to "meet the requirements of economic and cultural development in mountainous areas" and "the first and urgent task is to train a team of young, healthy cadres with high cultural, scientific and technical qualifications of each ethnic group".

The first phase of establishment was an extremely memorable period in the history of the school. The previous generations still call that time “finding land to build a school, finding students to open classes” because although there was a decision to establish the school, a person in charge and an “initial framework”, a seal and a separate account, there were no facilities, classrooms, or students to truly “make a school”.

The school's chronicle clearly stated the "3-point plan" at that time: "1. Quickly find a place to exchange for the Tin Union's base;

2. Admission for course 1;

3. Purchase equipment for 100 students, 20 - 30 staff and teachers".

After many efforts of the Provincial People's Committee, the Ethnic Minorities Committee, the Department of Education and Training and all the staff and teachers of the school, on October 15, 1984, the opening ceremony of the first school year of Nghe Tinh Ethnic Minorities High School took place, on a morning of pouring rain, the school was flooded but the atmosphere was joyful, emotional and full of love and hope.

Reading the memoirs of comrade Vi Chien Thang, the memoirs of teacher Nguyen Xuan Trach, teacher Nguyen Khac Tue, teacher Bui Quang Thong,... we can imagine more clearly the first years of building the highland school in the heart of Vinh city, which was also in the construction phase, built from "bricks and rubble".

10.-ho-duc-phoc(1).jpg
Comrade Ho Duc Phoc - Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, former Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghe An province visited the school on the occasion of Vietnam Teachers' Day 2010. Photo: NTCC

In those days, with inadequate food and clothing, education was probably a distant dream for the ethnic minorities. Therefore, teachers divided themselves up to go to the villages, to each house and field to visit, explain, and invite.

There were trips where he could not invite any students. There were trips where teacher Nguyen Xuan Trach - Vice Principal of the school had to travel all the way to the end of Ky Son land and spent nearly a month to persuade a few students to agree to enroll.

In the early days, the policy of the Department of Education and Training was to only focus on finding students in remote areas, not more favorable areas such as towns, so the problem of "finding students to open classes" became many times more difficult.

All beginnings are difficult. To gradually stabilize the system and seriously and effectively implement educational work, the school's teachers and students have worked together to overcome all difficulties and shortages.

Due to the characteristics and nature of the ethnic boarding school, the school's staff and teachers both perform the duties of teachers and shoulder the responsibilities of fathers and mothers, working hard day and night to raise students.

In the process of implementing training goals, the school always attaches importance to moral education, focusing on educating students about patriotism, love for socialism, solidarity among ethnic groups; purpose, motivation, attitude towards learning; feelings between teachers and students, friends; arousing in students dreams and ambitions; educating students to avoid social evils.

In 1994, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of its establishment and receiving the Third Class Labor Medal, the school held an inauguration ceremony for the construction project. Thanks to that, from having to use the facilities of the Tin Company as a school, the school now has a spacious, synchronous facility, located at 98 Mai Hac De Street, right at the gateway to Vinh City.

10 years, the first stage was full of hardships but the school has achieved encouraging results with 312 graduates, of which 177 went to college and university. There are regions and ethnic groups in the highlands of Nghe An, for the first time in its development history, people from this school graduated from high school, went to university and graduated from university. Students from the first courses have returned to the province and their localities to work, becoming key officials of agencies, departments, branches and organizations.

These are valuable achievements, especially in comparison with the number and qualifications of ethnic minority cadres before. This also affirms that the policy of opening schools is extremely correct and creative, demonstrating the strategic vision and deep concern of the provincial leaders for ethnic and mountainous areas.

The year 1996 marked an important milestone in the school's development. With Notice No. 42/TB-TU, Nghe An Provincial Party Committee clearly stated the policy: "Gradually upgrade the Provincial Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities to become a high-quality center of ethnic and mountainous education".

Implementing this special policy, the school has truly made great strides, creating momentum to implement more positive, feasible, and drastic solutions, in order to excellently complete the assigned tasks.

From training both junior high school and high school to focusing only on high school training; from recruiting students to recruiting students; from limited enrollment areas and subjects to expanded enrollment areas and subjects; the quantity and quality of input are improved; the source of students with good and excellent abilities is supplemented, creating an important premise for improving the quality of comprehensive education.

In the 2008-2009 school year, the school was moved from group B to group A in the provincial excellent student competition, in the same group as specialized schools, schools in the city area, and the plains.

During the period from 2009 to 2014, the passing rate of entrance exams to universities and colleges reached 80 - 85%. In 2014, the average exam score was 14.35 points/student, ranking 20th in the province. 20 years after its establishment, if compared with the first stage, it can be seen that the school has made great strides in realizing the goals set out in the decision to establish the school and deserves to become a high-quality center of ethnic and mountainous education.

In 2019, implementing Plan No. 306/KH-UBND, dated May 25, 2019 of the Provincial People's Committee, Nghe An Ethnic Boarding High School was selected as one of the 5 pilot high schools to build a high-quality key high school in Nghe An province, period 2019 - 2023. This is an important basis for the school to take breakthrough steps to improve the effectiveness of comprehensive education, affirm its position and enhance its brand.

In recent years, with the attention and investment of the province and the education sector, the school's facilities have been invested in, renovated, upgraded and built many new works and items. Determining that the teaching staff will determine the quality of education, the work of building the team is especially focused on. Under the direction and orientation of the Party cell, the school always focuses on training and developing a team of teachers with high professional qualifications, capable of meeting the increasingly diverse educational needs. Currently, 100% of the school's staff, teachers and employees have qualified and above-standard training.

In the 2023-2024 school year alone, the school ranked 4th, contributing to the overall achievements of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training on the national education map.

Over the past 40 years, Nghe An Ethnic Boarding High School has become the cradle of "human resource training and talent nurturing" for children of ethnic minorities in the mountainous and highland areas of Nghe An. Each step of growth of the students is also the joy, happiness and pride of leaders at all levels, of the ethnic community, especially of teachers, staff and employees of the school.

Up to now, throughout the districts of Western Nghe An, most generations of students of the provincial Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities have become officials, civil servants, and public employees in state agencies and units.
