Going back in time to the years of the resistance war against the US to save the country, in 1965, Nghe An opened its first "special" specialized mathematics classes. Four years later, the Nghe An Department of Education continued to open more specialized literature classes at Do Luong I High School.
However, to meet the demand for specialized secondary education, on October 15, 1974, in Dien Thanh commune, Dien Chau district, the Nghe An provincial leadership delegation, led by Provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Si Que, held a ceremony to announce the decision to establish a boarding high school for gifted students, based on the merger of specialized Literature and Mathematics classes currently studying at Do Luong 2 High School and Thanh Chuong 1 High School.
At that time, Nghe An province proudly boasted the first specialized high school in Northern Vietnam, a type of school whose mission was to provide comprehensive education, identify and nurture gifted students, create human resources, and cultivate talent.
In the difficult and challenging circumstances of a province on the central front line, the people of Nghe An, while concentrating their manpower and resources on the front lines, still dedicated their affection, food, and clothing to nurturing talented individuals for their homeland and country. This love and care, along with the tradition of valuing education in their homeland, served as a driving force, helping teachers and students overcome all hardships and strive for excellence in teaching and learning.
Due to wartime conditions and historical circumstances, the school has witnessed several relocations. In 1974, the specialized Math and Literature classes moved from Do Luong I High School to the coastal area of Dien Thanh (Dien Chau), then in 1975 the school moved again to a new location near National Highway 1 in Dien Chau district. In 1977, the school moved to Hung Loc commune, Vinh City. Subsequently, from 1981 to the present, the school has been located at 119 Le Hong Phong Street, Vinh City.
Having resided at its new location for over 40 years, Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School has undergone significant transformation in all aspects. From just two specialized classes in Mathematics and Literature in its early days, the school now has 15 specialized classes in each grade level, including: Mathematics, Mathematics 2, Informatics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature, History, Geography, English 1, English 2, French, Russian, Chinese, and Japanese. Currently, the school has 123 staff members, including teachers and employees, of whom 3 hold PhDs, nearly 100 hold Master's degrees, and many are key professionals in their respective fields.

Over 60 years of construction and development, Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School is striving to improve day by day, not only as a pioneering and elite institution of Nghe An province's education sector but also as a prestigious school, ranking among the top specialized high schools nationwide. The school has been and continues to excel in its mission of discovering, training, and nurturing generations of outstanding and talented individuals; it is an environment that ignites dreams and aspirations, a gathering place for the talents of Nghe An province, where precious "seeds" are sown and cared for… Generations of students have brought glory to the school named after the patriotic scholar Phan Boi Chau, further enriching the tradition of studiousness in Nghe An province.
These generations of students, who were both politically committed and professionally competent, have now grown into key officials in various fields, making significant contributions to the cause of national defense and development. Many are Labor Heroes, professors, doctors, and leading experts in basic sciences, engineering, literature and arts, economics, and public administration.

Over its 60-year journey of formation and development, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted has made significant strides in building an advanced and modern model of general education, marking remarkable progress and reaching regional and global standards. The school is known for its long history of academic achievements, with many students winning top prizes in national and international competitions.
In particular, for more than a decade, the school has consistently ranked among the top 3 nationwide in terms of national-level student excellence competition results. From 2013 to 2024, the school had 1,010 students winning awards in the National-level Student Excellence Competition, and 49 students participating in regional and international competitions in all five subjects: Mathematics, Informatics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. These included 12 Gold Medals, 13 Silver Medals, and 7 Bronze Medals. The school's university entrance exam results have consistently ranked among the top in the country, with many students achieving top and second-highest scores.
For its immense contributions to the cause of education and training, the Party and State have bestowed many prestigious awards upon the school, such as: the Government's Emulation Flag (2003, 2007), the Third-Class Labor Medal (1994), the Second-Class Labor Medal (1999, 2023), the First-Class Labor Medal (2004), the Third-Class Independence Medal (2009), and the title of Hero of Labor (2013). Sixty years mark the end of a chapter, but it also opens a new phase with a new vision and the expectation of a new position. A new chapter in history unfolds. With challenges ahead, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted has been, is, and will continue to rise from an outstanding model of a national specialized school to become a "ship sailing towards the open sea," aiming to build and strengthen an educational brand that reaches international standards.
To further enhance the important role of the school in developing high-quality education in Nghe An province in particular and the North Central region in general, on June 12, 2020, the Prime Minister approved the project to develop Vinh City, Nghe An province, into an economic and cultural center of the North Central region, including the project "Building Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School into a high-quality key school". The project emphasizes: "The construction of a new Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School in Nghe An province aims to ensure it meets standards, is comprehensive, modern, on par with regional and international levels, and meets the requirements for training talented individuals and high-quality human resources in the era of international integration." Currently, phase 1 of the project has been completed, with the investment scale including classrooms, functional rooms, and a library, all interconnected, with a total area of 85,233 m².2.
On February 28, 2023, the People's Council of Nghe An province approved Resolution No. 05/NQ HĐND on the investment policy for the project: Construction of a new Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School (Phase 2), with the following new construction items: administrative building, canteen building, student dormitory building; and other items (site leveling; power lines, transformer station; underground water tank; fence; fire prevention and fighting...).
