Struggling to 'rescue' canals in Yen Thanh 'suffocating' because of water hyacinth

The Vu Giang drainage canal system is more than 12 km long, draining floods for the communes of My Thanh, Dai Thanh, Lien Thanh, Khanh Thanh... However, this entire large drainage canal is completely covered by water hyacinth.

The representative of Lien Thanh Commune People's Committee added: Water hyacinth covers the entire Vu Giang drainage canal in Lien Thanh Commune, covering a distance of 7-8 km. To deal with the rapid growth of water hyacinth, the local government and the people have taken a number of measures to prevent it. For example, during the rainy season, when the water level rises, the commune mobilizes hundreds of people to use poles and boats to push the water hyacinth to the middle of the stream to let the water wash it away. However, as soon as this layer of water hyacinth is pushed away, another layer of water hyacinth flows back from My Thanh and Ly Thanh communes.

Also due to the water hyacinth causing congestion, every year during the rainy season, Khanh Thanh commune, located at the end of Vu Giang river, often suffers from floods, hundreds of houses are submerged.

In the same situation, the drainage canals of Nhan Thanh, Tang Thanh, and Hoa Thanh communes are also dense with water hyacinth. The water hyacinth forms a thick carpet, affecting the flow of water, polluting the river environment and surrounding areas because the water does not circulate.

Yen Thanh's drainage system includes the drainage canal systems of Vach Bac, Bau Chen, Bien Hoa, Dien Yen 2, Trung - Long, Khe Cat... mostly covered with water hyacinth and other types of grass.

Right from the beginning of the rice crop, the district directed the communes to mobilize forces to salvage water hyacinth, and at the same time, the district allocated over 300 million VND from the budget to support key communes covered by water hyacinth with 20-30 million VND/commune to salvage water hyacinth. However, the difficulty is that water hyacinth reproduces quickly, while mobilizing manual forces to handle water hyacinth is limited...
