Volkswagen Sweden said this is the first time in 54 years that Volkswagen has regained this position. Volkswagen dominated the new car market in Sweden in 1962 with the Volkswagen Beetle.
In 2016, the number of new cars registered in Sweden reached 372,300, an increase of 8% compared to 2015.
The Swedish Automobile Manufacturers Association explained the strong growth of the car market in 2016 due to "healthy" economic conditions, strong purchasing power, record low interest rates and a stable labor market.
