(Baonghean.vn) - At this time in previous years, winter vegetables in Quynh Luu and Dien Chau districts had many products to supply to the large market. However, this year, heavy rains have caused severe damage to vegetable farms, leading to a shortage of goods.

In early December, in the vegetable fields of Quynh Luu and Dien Chau districts, many vegetable patches in low-lying areas were yellowed and wilted; some people actively prepared the land to replant vegetables in the drained fields.
Ms. Ho Thi Nhung, a farmer in Quynh Minh commune (Quynh Luu) said that her family had grown 2 sao of mustard greens that were almost ready for harvest when the recent rain flooded everything, followed by intense sunlight, causing the entire crop to rot, turn yellow, and be considered spoiled.
"Like previous years, many families have harvested vegetables at this time, but this year due to heavy rain, the whole field is flooded and all the vegetables are damaged. If it continues to rain, we don't know when we will be able to grow vegetables again," Ms. Nhung shared.
On the roads in the communes of Quynh Minh, Quynh Luong... (Quynh Luu), a series of cargo trucks are not operating to purchase vegetables, tubers, and fruits like on other occasions. Sometradersaid that all the vegetables were spoiled so there were no vegetables to buy. Currently, the demand for vegetables, tubers, and fruits of all kinds in the cities is very large, but the amount of vegetables that people can buy is insignificant.

Mr. Ho Dien Vi - Vice Chairman of Quynh Minh Commune People's Committee said: The heavy rain and flood caused by storm No. 4 damaged most of the vegetable area in the commune, but the damage was not as great as the recent rain, because at that time most of the vegetable area was just planted. Meanwhile, in the recent rain, most of the vegetable area was ready for harvest, people had to spend a lot of time taking care of it, so the economic damage was caused. Statistics show that in the recent rain, Quynh Minh commune had about 100 hectares of vegetables lost and 59 hectares of vegetables affected.
"Due to the lack of vegetable supply to the market, some people take advantage of the vegetables that are not completely damaged to sell to traders at high prices, such as chrysanthemum vegetables which used to be only 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg, now increased to 8,000 - 10,000 VND/kg, and mustard greens have also increased in price, up to 10,000 VND/kg. To have enough vegetables for the upcoming Lunar New Year, the commune is currently orienting people to switch from long-term vegetables, tubers and fruits to growing short-term vegetables."
Ms. Vu Thi Bich Hang - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district said: This year, there was a lot of rain, especially after the heavy rains at the end of September and the rains at the end of November, 70% of the vegetable area of the communes in the coastal areas and 30% of the vegetable area of other highland communes were damaged. At this time, the amount of vegetables harvested to supply the market is low, only some highland fields are less affected. Meanwhile, at the same time in previous years, there were quite a lot of winter vegetables, traders bought and transported them to consume elsewhere.

According to the people of Dien Thanh commune, Dien Chau district, the vegetable fields that were damaged in the rains at the end of November will not be replanted because there will not be enough time to plant peanuts in the next spring crop. Therefore, this winter vegetable crop is considered a failure. Photo: Xuan Hoang |
Currently, farmers continue to wait for the land to dry up to resume production. The special feature of the coastal area is that people have a lot of experience in vegetable production, along with the land being easy to work, if the weather is favorable, in a few months, vegetables, tubers, and fruits of all kinds will be available to supply the market.
Dien Chau district in the recent rain also affected a lot.winter cropsMr. Le The Hieu - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dien Chau district said: In the recent rain, 100 hectares of newly planted potatoes were completely damaged; in addition, nearly 1,000 hectares of other vegetables such as kohlrabi, cabbage... replanted after heavy rains of storm No. 4 were also damaged by about 70%. Therefore, at this time, only some areas of vegetables on highlands can be harvested.

"Currently, Dien Chau district is contacting the potato seed supplier to continue supplying seeds for people to replant on an area of 100 hectares, trying to complete replanting before December 22. For the affected vegetable areas, people continue to take care of them, however, if the weather continues to rain, it will be difficult," said Mr. Le The Hieu.
This year, the rainy weather and heavy rainfall have made the production of winter vegetables difficult. Not only large vegetable farms, but also other vegetable growing areas and people growing in their home gardens are also disadvantaged. Therefore, many people are worried that the amount of green vegetables will not be as abundant as before at the end of this year.
