Identifying the cause of food poisoning at a kindergarten in Do Luong district

Students in Do Luong were poisoned after eating yogurt made by the school itself.

Accordingly, on May 9, 2023, at Thuan Son Kindergarten, Thuan Son commune, Do Luong district, a poisoning incident occurred, affecting 76 people, with no deaths.

Immediately after the poisoning incident, the Nghe An Province Food Safety and Hygiene Department sent a team of officials to investigate. The team took 10 samples and sent them to the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene for testing to determine the cause of the poisoning.
The 10 samples sent for testing include 6 food samples that the school kept during lunch and mid-afternoon meals on May 9, 2023 (1 sample of fermented yogurt, 1 sample of cantaloupe, 1 sample of white rice, 1 sample of pumpkin soup with peanuts, 1 sample of braised pork with quail eggs and 1 sample of stir-fried vegetables; 4 samples are vomit from patients with poisoning treated at Thuan Son Commune Health Station.
After testing, the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene has issued a written response on the test results of the suspected food poisoning samples and the Test Result Forms.
Based on the test results of the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene Control and the results of the investigation into poisoning as well as the clinical symptoms of the patients, the Nghe An Department of Food Safety and Hygiene determined that the cause of the food poisoning incident on May 9, 2023 at Thuan Son Kindergarten, Thuan Son Commune, Do Luong District was due to the bacteria S.aureus (staphylococcus aureus) in fermented yogurt.

The Department of Food Safety and Hygiene of Nghe An province requested the Department of Health to coordinate with the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An to direct the strengthening of food safety work in educational institutions with boarding kitchens.
The Health Department and the Health Center advise the People's Committee of Do Luong district to handle administrative violations against the collective kitchen of Thuan Son Kindergarten, Thuan Son commune, Do Luong district; at the same time, direct relevant units to strengthen food safety at educational institutions with boarding kitchens in the area. Along with that, promote propaganda to all villages, hamlets and to the people about the selection, use and processing of safe food, especially food and goods sold around schools, hospitals, factories and industrial parks.
