Uy Minh Vuong Ly Nhat Quang was the 8th son of King Ly Thai To. He was famous for his intelligence since childhood. He knew how to write poetry at the age of 8 and studied classics at the age of 10. He was taken care of and educated by his father and the royal family to soon become a pillar of the country.
In 1039, he was sent by Ly Thai Tong to Nghe An province to take care of tax collection. Here, Ly Nhat Quang worked diligently, collected all the assigned taxes and, unlike his predecessors, did not abuse the people's taxes, so he was known for his integrity and uprightness.
In 1041, considering Ly Nhat Quang a trustworthy person, Ly Thai Tong appointed him as the Governor of Nghe An - with the title of Uy Minh Marquis. At that time, Nghe An was a southern border region of Dai Viet, and management was still loose. Many local uprisings were rebellious in nature, causing trouble for the people, and the court had to suppress them many times. However, after Ly Nhat Quang was appointed as the Governor, the social situation in Nghe An gradually stabilized, and the law and order were restored.
Ly Nhat Quang attached great importance to economic development, encouraged and guided people to develop their professions, and exploited all the potentials of Nghe An. Along with recruiting people, reclaiming land, and establishing hamlets, he also taught people farming, silk weaving, and fabric weaving... He became the founder of many handicrafts in Nghe An.
Ly Nhat Quang chose the Bach Duong area (now consisting of 3 communes: Ngoc Son, Lam Son, Boi Son - Do Luong district) - a place with a central location of the whole district, convenient for both attack and defense - to build the headquarters. The areas of Khe Bo, Cu Don (Con Cuong), Nam Hoa (Nam Dan), Hoang Mai (Quynh Luu), Cong Trung (Yen Thanh), Vinh, Nghi Xuan, Ky Anh (Ha Tinh)... were recruited by him to establish villages and reclaim wasteland.
There are still many theories about Ly Nhat Quang's death. The genealogy of Qua Son temple states that Ly Nhat Quang died in a battle with the enemy on August 17, 1057 at Qua mountain.
According to statistics, in Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Thanh Hoa, there are more than 50 temples worshiping Ly Nhat Quang. The most prominent main temple is Qua Son temple in Do Luong district with a festival to thank the Buddha on January 19 to 21 every year.
