January 2, 2015 22:55

At the end of the year, “Sister Hoi” played by Thai Hoa helped De Mai Tinh 2 set a new record in Vietnam, after 3 days of showing the film reached 1 million USD, and by December 23 it was 3 million USD. Before that, “Bloody Heart” also reached 1 million USD after 3 days of showing. In 2014, domestic private cinema did quite well, “million dollar” sales were common.

In 2009, Avatar earned 2 million USD after 8 weeks of showing, setting a record for the first time a film reached a million USD in revenue in Vietnam. At that time, distributors were very happy with this victory. Domestic producers were also full of hope for Vietnamese films. Also in that year, the Vietnamese film Rescue the God of Death earned 20 billion VND, reaching the 1 million USD mark.

Blockbuster saturation

After the summer movie fiasco, Hollywood's revenue for the year dropped quite sharply. By the end of the year, only Transformers: Age Of Extinction had earned 1.087 billion USD, surpassing the 1 billion USD mark in global revenue, while the remaining films with the highest profits were only at 700 - 800 million USD.

This year in Vietnam, Amazing Spiderman 2, Godzilla, Annabell, Transformers: Age Of Extinction, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Big Hero... reached the 1 million USD mark. The "biggest" of these is Transformers: Age Of Extinction with a revenue of 2 million USD (about 44 billion VND) after only 1 week of release, Big Hero 6 earned 34 billion after 12 days of release.

After Teo em, Thai Hoa continues to help De Mai calculate 2 to make a lot of money.

High-grossing movies in the Top 5 worldwide such as Guardians Of The Galaxy, Maleficent, X-Men: Days Of Future Past... did not reach 1 million USD in Vietnam.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong, Head of Film Department, National Cinema Center said: “Top films in North America such as Gone Girl, Interstella are only shown for a few weeks in Vietnam. Our audience tends to prefer entertainment films with a more everyday nature.”

Meanwhile, domestic films are growing very well. More and more Vietnamese films are achieving revenue of over 1 million USD.

Domestic films win big at home

In 2011, Long Ruoi set a new record for Vietnamese cinema, reaching the milestone of 2 million USD within 1 month. Director Charlie Nguyen and the main actor in the film Thai Hoa were also surprised by this number, because they themselves were still unsatisfied with many aspects of the work.

2013 was even more impressive. Teo em with the acting of the “box office king” Thai Hoa earned 80 billion VND, and until now no other film has been able to catch up. In 2013, there were also Nha co 5 nang tien (The House with 5 Fairies) earning 60 billion VND, My nhan ke (The Beauty Scheme) earning 52 billion VND... showing that domestic films can also earn millions of dollars like foreign films at home.

The Vietnamese film “menu” in 2014 increased significantly with more than 30 films produced, and this was also the year with the most 16+ rated films ever. Producers began to experiment with genres that few people produced in Vietnam, such as horror films, action films, or topics that no one had done before, such as racing films (Speed and Curves)... The film revenue in 2014 was also very impressive, most of them were from 30-40 billion VND or more. Director Victor Vu brought a lot of money to Galaxy with Bride Wars 2, Bloody Heart, Scandal: The Return of the Glory.

The appeal of the film market has attracted more investors. Male singer Dam Vinh Hung also ventured into the film industry, investing in the film Blind Knight, although it was heavily promoted, the film only lasted a few weeks in theaters. Actress Truong Ngoc Anh's company and its partners with their debut product Huong Ga are on the path to success, being marketed and "lobbyed" to the fullest, so it will not be difficult to achieve million-dollar revenue, although the expenditure is not small. Huong Ga was shown from October 31 but is still in theaters today, and is likely to surpass the revenue of Bloody Heart (?). Losing a Body was the surprise of 2014, which was made by a brand new young director, "following" the case of cosmetic surgeon Cat Tuong, and earned up to 19 billion VND, although the break-even point for production and distribution was only about 6 billion.

“Big companies like Galaxy and BHD pay close attention to audience tastes, so it is not difficult for Vietnamese films to reach a revenue of 1 million USD. Even if Vietnamese films are shown at the same time as American blockbusters, they can still attract more audiences. For example, the film De Mai Tinh 2, in terms of art, has nothing, it is purely entertainment but is very popular, one screening is in 3-4 rooms and still has many customers. Looking at the sales, it can be seen that the film market in Vietnam today is clearly a lucrative market, making money, so more and more units are investing,” said Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong.
