Penalties for violating the safe distance between cars
Mr. Vo Hoang, residing in Truong Vinh ward, asked: When driving a car on the road, if you do not keep the prescribed distance or do not comply with the "Minimum distance between two vehicles" sign, will you be fined? What is the specific fine according to current regulations?
Reply:
According to the provisions of Point l, Clause 4, Article 6 of Decree No. 168/2023/ND-CP of the Government, effective from January 1, 2025, a driver who does not keep a safe distance and causes a collision with the vehicle in front, or does not keep the correct distance as instructed by the sign "Minimum distance between two vehicles", will be subject to an administrative penalty with a fine of VND 2,000,000 to VND 3,000,000.

Compliance with safe distance is not only a mandatory requirement of the law, but also demonstrates the awareness and responsibility of traffic participants for their own safety and the safety of the community. Especially in bad weather conditions such as rain, slippery roads, limited visibility, keeping a reasonable distance becomes even more necessary. When it rains, the reaction time and braking distance of vehicles are often longer, if the distance from the vehicle in front is not maintained far enough, the risk of collision is very high.
Authorities recommend that drivers regularly observe traffic signs and adjust the distance between vehicles to suit actual road conditions. When detecting the sign “Minimum distance between two vehicles”, drivers must strictly comply to ensure safety, avoid being fined and contribute to building a civilized and safe traffic culture.
Keeping a safe distance is one of the important factors in reducing traffic accidents, protecting people's lives, health and property. Strictly complying with this regulation should be considered the responsibility and obligation of every citizen when participating in traffic, especially in the context of increasing traffic volume and complicated weather conditions as present.
