(Baonghean.vn) - Taking advantage of the sunny weather after the rain, people in the vegetable area of Hung Dong commune (Vinh city) went to the fields to clean up rotten vegetables and plow to make a new crop of vegetables even though the price of seeds is high.

Vegetable production area of Vinh Xuan hamlet,Hung Dong communehas a total area of nearly 18 hectares with a total of 70 households directly producing all year round. This is the largest concentrated vegetable production area in Vinh City, supplying an abundant amount of vegetables to the city every day. However, continuous heavy rains in recent days have completely damaged this vegetable area.

At this time, taking advantage of the dry weather, people in the vegetable area of Hung Dong commune have gone to the fields to overcome the damage caused by the flood. On the morning of September 12, many people took turns cleaning up the flooded vegetables, plowing, and using plastic bags... in the vegetable fields to produce a new crop of vegetables in time to meet market demand.

Ms. Ngo Thi Tuyet in Hung Dong commune said: After the water receded, my whole family had to go to the field to clean up the completely rotten beds of mustard greens and lettuce, and at the same time rebuild the support poles and roofs. Then, plow and prepare to sow new vegetable seeds. These tasks need to be done quickly because vegetables are usually supplied daily, and if the crop is delayed, the farmers will lose that crop, while the market is also in short supply.

According to the people, due to the rainy season, the current vegetable growing area is mainly short-term varieties, of which 70% of the area is planted with mustard greens. The advantage of this vegetable is that the time from sowing to harvest is only about 1 week, so when encountering heavy rain and strong winds, it can be harvested early, minimizing damage. Although the selling price is cheaper than other vegetables, it is safe. For other vegetable varieties, although they have higher value, they can only be harvested after an average of 1-2 months, so there are risks when the weather is bad.

However, the price of mustard greens is currently 80,000 VND/kg, which has doubled compared to a month ago, so the cost of this new crop has also increased significantly, causing difficulties for people. The consolation at this time is that the price of green vegetables has increased by about 30% compared to the time before the flood, so this is the motivation for people to confidently reproduce after the flood.

Along with planting new vegetable crops, vegetable growers in Hung Dong commune are also focusing on embanking the fields, clearing drainage canals, and erecting roofs... to drain water promptly if heavy rain occurs in the near future.

In fact, not only the recent rain but also during every natural disaster season, the vegetable area of Hung Dong commune (Vinh city) is often severely flooded, causing crop losses. Regarding a long-term solution, Mr. Tran Anh Tan - Chairman of Hung Dong Commune People's Committee said: In fact, the Hung Dong vegetable area is often flooded because the Nghi Kim - Nghi Van drainage ditch has not been completed, while this is the main ditch connecting from Bau Dong ditch in the commune. Therefore, when it rains heavily, the water cannot drain but accumulates in a low-lying area, causing severe flooding. The locality will propose to the city to continue implementing the Nghi Kim - Nghi Van ditch to drain water for people in the vegetable area in particular and in the locality in the coming time.
