(Baonghean.vn) - In Chau Hoan commune, Quy Chau district, there are 2 people recognized by the President as Meritorious Artisan, including Mr. Truong Van Thong in Ba Cong village, a famous panpipe maker in the mountainous region of Nghe An.

Mr. Thong also set aside a small corner in the middle room to make the Khen Be. This musical instrument is made entirely from bamboo but is the most sophisticated of all the musical instruments of the Thai community. The crafting requires high precision. Mr. Truong Van Thong said that he learned about the profession of making panpipes from his father. But his father passed away more than 40 years ago. Since 1999, he has started to restore the craft of making panpipes. After dozens of failures, he was able to get the first panpipe that could be used. Thanks to his efforts in making musical instruments, in 2019, Mr. Thong was awarded the title of Meritorious Artisan by the State. From 2012 to present, he has participated in teaching the method of using the panpipe to many classes. Currently, Mr. Truong Van Thong is the Chairman of the Thai Culture Club of Chau Hoan commune. Meanwhile, also in Ba Cong village, Mr. Vi Van Mai is a very famous artisan who makes and performs Thai flutes in Quy Chau district. He is capable of making and playing most types of Thai flutes as well as Kinh bamboo flutes. Mr. Mai was awarded the title of Meritorious Artisan by the State in 2022. In Chau Hoan commune, there is a Thai cultural club with 12 members. In addition to musical instrument artisans, there are also elderly people who sing folk songs and perform ancient melodies.
