(Baonghean) - In the Spring of 89 years ago, in the Muong Qua area of the mountainous border district of Con Cuong (now Mon Son and Luc Da communes), a major event took place in political and social life, which was the birth of the Mon Son Party Cell - the first Party cell in the Western region of Nghe An.

According to historical documents, in 1931, with the French colonialists' aggressive implementation of the policy of terror, many party members were sacrificed and arrested, the revolutionary movement entered a period of decline, and our Party had to retreat into secret activities.

To ensure forces and maintain revolutionary bases, the Central Region Party Committee decided to expand its scope of activities to the mountainous districts of Nghe An and sent comrades: Le Xuan Dao (belonging to the Regional Party Committee), Nguyen Huu Binh (Nghe An Provincial Party Committee), Le Manh Duyet (Anh Son District Party Committee) to the Muong Qua - Mon Son area to coordinate activities and build the movement.

From Anh Son district, the communists crossed the forest, upstream the Giang River to the village hidden behind the Pu Ong and Pu Qua ranges. The work began to progress when the comrades contacted and enlightened Vi Van Khang - an educated young man of the Thai ethnic group. Comrade Vi Van Khang continued to mobilize and enlighten comrades Vi Van Hanh, Vi Van Quy, and Vi Van Lam, who were young people with education and patriotism. The comrades mobilized the people to unite to fight against oppression and build the village...

In March 1931, the communists in Muong Qua led the people to fight against the tyrants and won. About a month later, at the private home of comrade Vi Van Khang, the Mon Son Party Cell was officially established. The cell initially consisted of 5 party members: Vi Van Khang (Secretary), Vi Van Hanh, Vi Van Quy, Tran Ngan, Le Manh Duyet; later, comrade Vi Van Lam was admitted.

Comrade Vi Van Khang's private home became a meeting place, a place to hide cadres and print documents. The newly established Party cell immediately began leading the revolutionary struggle: printing propaganda documents, establishing the Red Peasant Association and Red Self-Defense Force to gather and enlighten the people's fighting spirit, gradually creating a spread of the movement throughout the villages and hamlets of Western Nghe An.

From July to August 1945, when the revolutionary movement was boiling across the country, the opportunity was ripe, the Mon Son Party Cell decided to lead the masses to rise up to punish the oppressors and exploiters, and seize power. In those days, on the top of the Con Chua banyan tree, the red hammer and sickle flag fluttered like a signal to gather people from all the villages. Under the banyan tree, hundreds of people protested, went to the houses of landlords and canton chiefs to collect rice, money and distribute it to the poor. Under the leadership of the Party Cell, the revolutionary movement of the Muong Qua people in general and Mon Son in particular won victory.

During the two resistance wars against the French and the Americans, the people of Mon Son made significant contributions in terms of manpower and resources, contributing to the victory. The whole commune mobilized 2,780 people to participate in the civilian labor force, thousands of young people joined the army, and contributed thousands of tons of food to the resistance war. At the end of the war, 94 outstanding children sacrificed for the cause of national liberation and 35 wounded soldiers, 1 Vietnamese Heroic Mother, 1,389 groups and individuals were awarded by the Party and the State.

The Con Chua banyan tree and the private house of Mr. Vi Van Khang were recognized as historical revolutionary relics. In particular, in 1996, the people of Mon Son commune were honored to be awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the President. Every year, the Mon Son - Muong Qua Festival is held to commemorate the revolutionary soldiers and arouse pride in the young generation of the homeland.
