At about 2:00 a.m. on November 28, 2018, a working group of Chau Phu B Ward Police, Chau Doc City, led by Lieutenant Tran Van Be Nam and 3 police officers, inspected a fish shooting game shop at Group 1, Chau Quoi 1 Hamlet, Chau Phu B Ward, Chau Doc City, An Giang Province.
When the police discovered the police force, the young men in the fish shooting game shop ran away. Because they suspected the group of young men were using drugs, the task force pursued them, at this time only Tran Hong Thien was left in the fish shooting game shop.
After the working group returned to the fish shooting game shop, Tran Hong Thien suddenly used scissors to stab Lieutenant Tran Van Be Nam twice and then ran away. When seeing Lieutenant Nam being stabbed, the accompanying officers and surrounding people took Lieutenant Nam to the provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment.
After committing the crime, Thien fled the area. On February 13, 2019, Tran Hong Thien surrendered to Chau Doc City Police and confessed to his crime.
At the investigation agency, Thien confessed that he used drugs and was afraid of being arrested and sent to rehab, so he assaulted comrade Nam to escape.
