Creating a breakthrough in forest development in Yen Thanh
(Baonghean) - In order to gradually and effectively exploit the potential and advantages of forests, in recent years, Yen Thanh district has focused on developing agroforestry, improving the economic efficiency of forests in the direction of developing multifunctional forestry.
One of the typical examples of sustainable forest capital development in Yen Thanh district is Thinh Thanh commune. In addition to focusing on protecting 370 hectares of protective forests, for more than 10 years now, the locality has also planted 130 hectares of cajuput trees in the forests of Khua and Khe Cham, bringing double benefits. Thanks to forest protection and planting, many families have made a breakthrough in economic development.
For example, Mr. Nguyen Phuong Khanh's family in Dong Thinh hamlet has 5 hectares of production forest land. Previously, they often planted cassava and paper materials, so their income was not high. Since 2007, with the help of the local government, he has boldly planted So trees on the entire area. After the first 5 harvests, on average, 1 hectare of So trees yields from 3.5 to 4 tons of fresh seeds, which are purchased by traders at the site at a price of 15 to 17 thousand VND/kg.
Mr. Khanh shared: After 12 years of growing So, it has been shown that this is a tree that brings in better income than other crops on the same area. If planting Acacia takes 5-6 years to harvest, then planting So, from the 5th year onwards, the fruit can be harvested every year, each hectare can bring 50-60 million VND to the forest owner. From the success in Thinh Thanh, Yen Thanh district is now planning to expand So.

As a semi-mountainous commune, Minh Thanh has an area of 2,100 hectares of forest and forestry land. Along with the allocation of forest land to 1,200 households, the local government has focused on developing a suitable agricultural and forestry development plan by encouraging people to expand the area of large timber plantations, combine livestock farming under the forest canopy, and plant fruit trees and medicinal plants. Bringing the value of forestry production to over 20 billion VND per year, accounting for 22% of the commune's agricultural production.
From this movement, more and more models with high economic efficiency have emerged. Typically, in Hamlet 8, there is the family of Mr. Phan Viet Sang. In addition to investing in developing 1.5 hectares of paper material forest, he has also planted more than 1 hectare of native oranges. Thanks to focusing on care and applying advances in science and technology, the annual fruit yield reaches 15 - 20 tons/ha, after deducting all expenses, he still earns 200 million VND.

Currently, there are 15 hectares of gac produced using biological methods, with an average yield of 12 - 15 tons of fresh fruit per hectare, used as raw materials to process drinks and food essential oils.
Mr. Nguyen Sy Da - Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of TH Raw Material Investment and Development Joint Stock Company in the Northeast of Nghe An said: Regarding the strategy for developing raw material trees, for normal timber acacia trees, they are planted from 6 to 7 years old, while some large timber tree areas are planted from 10 to 12 years old to provide raw materials for wood factories. For medicinal plants, TH is currently planting many types of trees to make nutritious drinks to supply to the market.

Yen Thanh has nearly 25 thousand hectares of forest and forestry land, of which the forested land area accounts for 18,502 hectares. On average, each year, the proportion of agricultural and forestry economy accounts for 23.7% of the district's agricultural production value. Every year, in addition to planting 1,500 hectares of production forest, the district also pays special attention to protecting natural forests and upstream protection forests. In particular, in the district, there are currently over 1 thousand hectares of pine trees in the resin exploitation period, which are very susceptible to forest fires. Therefore, every year, the Protective Forest Management Board and the District Forest Protection Department have strengthened measures in forest fire prevention and control.
Yen Thanh district will arrange 1 thousand hectares of forest, 800 hectares of high-quality trees and some high-value forestry trees such as sandalwood trees that are being experimentally planted. In particular, Yen Thanh district has planned areas for the development of large timber trees and trees with high economic value and oriented people to implement step by step to ensure livelihoods and preserve precious vegetation. Thereby improving the efficiency of forest management and development, not only bringing economic benefits to people, but also contributing to environmental protection and responding to climate change.
