Thai Hoa: Controlling sugarcane diseases
(Baonghean) - Currently, the entire Thai Hoa town has over 1,000 hectares of raw sugarcane that is in the period of strong growth and high sugar accumulation. However, nearly half of this area has been infected with white cotton lint.
Hot, humid weather with lots of rain is a favorable opportunity for white cotton lint to spread widely. Productivity, output and sugar content will decrease sharply if the disease is not prevented and controlled promptly and effectively.

In the 2013-2014 pressing season, Thai Hoa Town had a total area of over 1,000 hectares of sugarcane. According to the investigation of the Plant Protection Station and communes and wards in the whole town, nearly 500 hectares were infected with aphids, with an average level of about 15-20%, and a high level of 25-35%. Concentrated in key raw material areas such as Nghia Tien, Tay Hieu, Quang Phong... Determining that this is a time of decisive significance for productivity, output, and sugar content, NAT&L Sugar Company has actively directed farmers to prevent and control the epidemic.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tan, agricultural officer of NA T&L Sugar Company said: “Realizing that the harmful effects of white cotton linters on sugarcane are long-term and also affect the process of preserving the roots for the next crop. Therefore, the company has policies to support farmers in borrowing medicine and funding to buy pumps for the most effective prevention, ensuring the yield and quality of sugarcane for the upcoming pressing season.”
Currently, NA T&L Sugar Company has lent people pesticides and 6 million VND/spraying machine; the town's Plant Protection Station has provided all kinds of special drugs to treat white cotton aphids such as: Anboom, Victoria, Javidan... and given specific instructions so that people are not subjective about this disease.
With the active and regular field visits of farmers, along with the participation of specialized agencies in Thai Hoa Town, the white cotton mite epidemic is being controlled.
