Trawling the sea is a traditional method of fishing for seafood of the people of Cua Lo beach, Vinh city, in which fishermen use a large net (called a trawl net) to surround and collect fish, shrimp or other seafood. This is a way of fishing seafood close to shore, usually lasting from January to September of the lunar calendar, the time when the sea is calm. Photo: QA

To practice the trawling business, fishermen must buy a long net with small mesh. The person in charge of casting the net must sail from the shore about 1 km out to sea, then cast the net into the sea in an arc or U shape. Photo: QA

Once the net has been spread out to sea, people on the shore divide into two groups, each side has 6-8 people holding the rope to pull the net up, and the sea fish will fall into the net. Therefore, this job is often jokingly called "going backwards" at sea. Photo: QA

Mr. Do Van Kien in Nghi Thu ward has been involved in the profession of trawling for more than 20 years. He shared: Each batch of nets, from the time they are released until they are pulled ashore, takes about 2 hours. Depending on the tide and the season, the yield will vary. Some batches are big, pulling in hundreds of fish, but some batches only yield a few kilos, not worth the effort of dozens of people... Photo: QA

The fishermen split into two teams and "go backwards" until the two sides pull the net together to complete the job. Compared to other offshore fishing jobs, this job is much safer because most of the fishermen are on shore, rarely facing big waves. Photo: QA

The interesting thing is that these batches of seafood are often sold in bundles or trays or baskets, not by weight as usual, the price is negotiable, depending on the type of fish, shrimp, squid. On average, each small batch costs a few tens of thousands, however, there are also batches of good quality fish and shrimp that cost hundreds of thousands of dong. Photo: QA
