Effectiveness of the resolution on 'planting acacia' in Mau Duc
(Baonghean.vn) - Introduced in 2003, it can be affirmed that acacia trees have become the main crop in the economic development of the forest hills in Mau Duc commune (Con Cuong), contributing to changing the lives of farmers, helping many households escape poverty and become rich.
Located on the left bank of the Lam River, the lives of people in Mau Duc commune (Con Cuong) mainly depend on agricultural production. Therefore, the introduction of crop varieties suitable for soil conditions and mountainous terrain is always an issue of concern and focus for the Party Committee and the commune government. With the introduction of acacia trees in recent years, it has affirmed its economic value, contributing to changing the lives of farmers here. Coming to Mau Duc today, we will witness immense, lush acacia gardens and spacious, beautiful houses.

Mr. Lo Van Thang in Na Duoi village (Mau Duc) said: “Nowadays, transportation is convenient, so when the trees reach harvest age, traders come to buy the whole garden, the growers just need to negotiate the selling price and get the money, the traders take care of the harvesting and transportation. Thanks to growing acacia, my family's life has been able to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty.”
In 2003, acacia trees took root in Mau Duc. At that time, the provincial Agricultural and Forestry Extension Center supported the construction of a 2-hectare acacia planting model. Party member Lo Van Nam and Mr. Lo Van Huu's household in Ke Trang village were selected to participate in the model. In 2005, afforestation projects under Program 135 were implemented in Mau Duc, but many households were still not interested in planting this raw material tree. The Resolution of the 18th Party Congress of the commune, term 2000-2005, identified acacia trees as one of the key trees in the economic development of the commune. The issue of afforestation was also discussed and included in the Party cell meetings in the villages, with Party members as the core and leading by example.

In 2008, the 2-hectare acacia plantation of Mr. Lo Van Nam and Mr. Lo Van Huu yielded a harvest with a revenue of 50 million VND. Seeing the effectiveness of planting acacia trees, people actively participated. The acacia planting area has continuously increased rapidly over the years. In 2012, the whole commune had only 650 hectares, but now this number has reached 1,800 hectares and strives to cover the entire area of raw material trees by 2020.

Mr. Ngan Van Duong - Vice Chairman of Mau Duc Commune People's Committee said: Forest planting has now become a profession, people can live on the forest, get rich thanks to the forest. Over 80% of households in the commune participate in planting acacia trees even though they do not receive financial support and tree seeds from the State. Forest planting is gradually asserting itself as the spearhead economy of this highland commune. And more importantly, the awareness of the crop structure and the consciousness of self-improvement, not waiting or relying on the State's support policies of ethnic minorities have had a strong change.
