June Electricity Bills Soar: Warnings from Extreme Weather and Electricity Usage Habits

The prolonged hot weather, along with students entering summer vacation, has caused the demand for electricity in the Northern region in June to increase sharply.

This is also the main reason for the high electricity bills of many households, causing much concern among the public. According to records, the North has experienced the longest and most widespread heat wave since the beginning of 2025. The average temperature during the month has remained high, with many days reaching 38-39 degrees Celsius, and in some places exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. In such harsh weather conditions, cooling devices are forced to operate at higher capacity to ensure efficiency, leading to increased power consumption - even though the time the device is used may not change much.

In particular, on June 2, 2025, according to the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), at 22:00, electricity consumption in 27 northern provinces and cities (excluding Hanoi) reached a record of 18,084 MW - an increase of 684 MW compared to the peak set at 13:15 on the same day (17,400 MW). This shows the direct impact of weather on the electricity demand of households, production and service establishments. In addition to weather factors, June is also the beginning of summer vacation, increasing the time students spend at home, thereby significantly increasing household electricity consumption. In addition, from May 10, 2025, the Ministry of Industry and Trade adjusted the average retail electricity price up 4.8% to VND 2,204.0655/kWh (excluding VAT).

Although this increase is not large, when combined with the high consumption output in June, the final electricity bill will also increase accordingly - which is completely predictable. Use electricity economically - Proactively respond to the hot season. With the forecast that the hot weather may continue, EVNNPC respectfully requests and encourages customers to continue to join hands in practicing solutions to use electricity economically and effectively.

Small changes in daily usage habits can bring great cost-effectiveness, especially during peak hours (13:00–15:00 and 20:00–23:00), such as: Using energy-saving labeled devices; Adjusting air conditioning temperature to a reasonable level (from 26–28 degrees Celsius); Making the most of natural daylight; Turning off electrical equipment when not in use.

In the long term, investing in installing rooftop solar power systems will help households and businesses proactively source electricity, significantly reduce living expenses, and contribute to the goal of developing renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions according to the Government's orientation.
