According to Principal Nguyen Van Thanh, at around 10:20 p.m. on September 30, after a heavy rain that lasted for several hours, water suddenly poured down from Mat stream. "In just about 20 minutes, the water rose rapidly and flooded almost the entire school. At that time, many teachers were still on duty in the school but did not have time to evacuate their belongings and equipment," said Mr. Thanh.

According to Mr. Thanh, at this time, in addition to teachers, there are nearly 300 boarding students staying in the dormitory. "The school yard was flooded about 1 meter after just a few minutes. Most of the classrooms and the dining hall were flooded deeply. Books and basic school supplies were all soaked," Mr. Thanh said, adding that after the water receded, a very thick layer of mud was left behind. The school is still trying to fix the problem, but it is expected to take nearly 2 days.

Mr. Vi Dinh Phuc - Chairman of the People's Committee of Luong Minh commune said that the prolonged heavy rain and flash floods caused a series of landslides in the area. The local authorities had to evacuate about 80 people in Dua village that night. "There were many landslides after the water receded. The most serious was the landslide on the main road of the commune running along the Nam Non river. Now the commune is cut off at the location through Dua village. The villages in the inner area are isolated," said Mr. Phuc.
