Dien Chau farmers go to the fields to produce early winter peanut crop
(Baonghean.vn) - With the goal of ensuring 1,560 tons of peanut seeds for the 2019 Spring crop, Dien Chau farmers are currently actively producing early winter peanuts to make up for the loss of the summer-autumn crop.
Dien Hung is the locality that grows peanuts the earliest in the district. After harvesting the summer-autumn sesame, taking advantage of the sunny weather, people went to the fields to plant peanuts. According to Ms. Cao Thi Loan - a peanut grower in Dien Hung commune, planting peanuts early in the winter will ensure higher productivity and avoid cold damage at the end of the season. To avoid flooding and erosion during heavy rains, people make high beds and cover 100% of the area with nylon.

Dien Thinh is the locality with the largest area of peanuts in the district, with more than 200 hectares. While in other localities, people mainly grow winter corn, people here specialize in peanuts.
Ms. Hoang Thi Yen in hamlet 20, Dien Thinh commune said that her family planted 3 sao of peanuts, harvested nearly 300 kg of dry peanuts, left about 300 kg for seeds for the upcoming spring crop, and sold the rest of the peanut seeds at 4 million VND/100 kg, earning more than 10 million VND, while growing corn would only earn 3 - 4 million VND at best.

Taking advantage of favorable weather and high humidity in the soil, farmers in communes with a tradition of growing winter peanuts such as Dien Hung, Dien Hoang, Dien Thanh, Dien Thinh, etc. are now planting winter peanuts with varieties L14, L20 and Nghe An lotus. As they sow, farmers cover the peanuts with plastic to protect them from the cold, and also raise the beds to prevent waterlogging.
According to the plan, the winter peanut area in the whole district will reach about 650 hectares, which will be completed in August, striving to harvest in November with an output of 1,560 tons; ensuring a source of quality peanut seeds for the 2019 Spring crop.
