Quynh Luu: Evacuating people from deep flooded areas

Due to the impact of storm No. 4, heavy rain has occurred in Quynh Luu district, as of 10:00 this morning (September 29), the measured rainfall was 367mm. Heavy rain after the circulation of storm No. 4 has caused serious damage to many localities in Quynh Luu. Up to now, 5,559 households have been flooded, mainly concentrated in Quynh Lam, Quynh Yen, Quynh My, Quynh Hong communes, Cau Giat town. Of which, the most severe are in Quynh Lam commune and Cau Giat town.

In addition, heavy rain and strong winds also caused the roofs of 3 houses to be blown off; landslides of more than 220m of river, lake and dam dykes, mainly in the communes of Quynh Lam, Quynh Hung, Quynh Thang...

In addition, more than 1,334 hectares of vegetables; 947 hectares of aquaculture were flooded; more than 5,978 poultry died... Notably, by noon today, 99/101 dams in the entire Quynh Luu district had overflowed.

In Cau Giat town, as of noon today, more than 500 households were flooded, of which more than 70 households were deeply flooded. The deeply flooded households were mainly in Block 4 and Block 6, located east of National Highway 1A and on both sides of the Thai River. This is an area that is often flooded, especially when there is prolonged heavy rain.

Mr. Ho Thanh Cong, residing in Block 1, Cau Giat Town, said: since 3am this morning, the water from the Thai River has risen very quickly, his family had to move their belongings to higher ground. According to Mr. Cong, the water is currently continuing to rise very quickly, now the water has entered the house more than 20cm, if the flooding continues, his whole family will have to move.

Since last night (September 28), the People's Committee of Cau Giat town has mobilized forces to evacuate people in deeply flooded areas overnight. This morning, households flooded over 1m, along with households of elderly people living alone, and families in difficult circumstances in the area were also evacuated to safety by the rescue forces of the People's Committee of Cau Giat town.

However, because water from the western communes continues to flow in, the locality cannot be subjective. According to Mr. Hoang Danh Lai - Secretary of Quynh Luu District Party Committee: The cause of widespread flooding in the area this time is considered to be due to heavy rains in a short period of time. In addition, there are also a number of unfinished projects and construction works in the district.

Currently, in addition to National Highway 48B being flooded in some sections in Quynh My and Ngoc Son communes, National Highway 1A passing through Cau Giat town is also flooded in some places; many inter-district roads in Quynh Lam and Quynh Dien communes... are also flooded, causing difficulties for people to travel.

Faced with the unusual developments of floods, leaders of Quynh Luu district have also directed local authorities, agencies, departments and functional branches in the area to closely monitor the flood situation, ensuring 100% of the military is ready to help the people. Localities with severe flooding also need to mobilize regular troops, be ready to rescue and help people move people and property to safety.
