Illegal sand mining, young man sentenced to prison
(Baonghean.vn) - On October 30, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial of defendant Nguyen Van Truong (born 1996), residing in Hung Loi commune, Hung Nguyen district, for the crime of "Violating regulations on resource exploitation".
According to the investigation results, on May 25, 2018, Nguyen Van Truong was discovered by Hung Nguyen District Police and administratively fined 1.5 million VND for illegally exploiting sand and gravel on Lam River.

On May 26, Nguyen Van Truong and two others continued to use illegal sand mining equipment on the Lam River in Hamlet 7, Hung Loi Commune, when they were discovered and arrested by the Environmental Police Department (Nghe An Police). The amount of sand and gravel that Truong's ship illegally mined when caught was determined by the authorities to be more than 105 m3.
At the trial, defendant Truong admitted to the crime as charged in the indictment and expressed remorse and repentance.
Considering the case as a whole and other mitigating circumstances, the panel sentenced Nguyen Van Truong to 9 months in prison.
