On Twitter, Ukrainian diplomats wrote to The Sun and Independent newspapers, saying the greeting was a "patriotic expression" and comparing it to phrases such as "Glory to France" or "Glory to the kingdom".
“Do you call those who say these phrases nationalists, and will you shout against them?” - Ukrainian diplomats asked.
"Glory to Ukraine! Glory to Heroes!" was the slogan of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. During World War II, the organization operated mainly in Western Ukraine and fought against the Soviet army, collaborating with Nazi Germany.
After the war, the organization continued to fight against the Soviet government. In recent years, this greeting has become popular and is often used in modern political practice in Ukraine.
