Nghe An candidates seek many admission options as the door to university entrance based on graduation exam scores is getting narrower
(Baonghean.vn) - This seems to have been predicted when in recent years, the quota of universities for candidates applying for admission based on high school graduation exam results has been increasingly narrowed. Instead, admission based on separate exams has been "reigning".
Multiple admission methods
Vinh University of Technical Education recently announced admission to about 1,200 candidates, mainly based on academic records or the results of the competency assessment exam.
The remaining 1,000 quotas (about 60%) will be reserved for candidates who register for admission based on the results of the High School Graduation Exam in both university and college systems. Mr. Cao Danh Chinh - Vice Principal of the school said: Due to the small number of quotas, the admission scores based on the graduation exam results for the majors are quite high, of which the highest are in the fields of automotive technology and electricity - electronics. Last year's lowest admission score was 17 points and the highest was 19.20 points.

Vinh University has also announced the results of direct admission, priority admission and early admission to full-time university in the first round of 2023. Candidates for direct admission are considered for admission according to 4 methods: according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, priority admission according to the school's regulations; the rest are considered for direct admission based on graduation exam results and results of competency assessment exams. Currently, the school will reserve about 50% of the quota for candidates admitted based on high school graduation exam results.
Compared to many previous years, the quota for candidates admitted based on resultshigh school graduation examincreasingly less. Instead, at the same time, schools offer many other admission methods, some schools even have up to 10 admission methods. Among the methods, the most popular today is admission based on the results of competency assessment exams, according to international English certificates combined with academic results. In lower-ranked schools, the popular method is admission based on academic records.

By this method, at this time, many candidates have received university admission notices. With an IELTS certificate of 7.5, second prize in the provincial excellent student category in English, second prize in the Science and Technology Competition, a final score of 9.6 points and a series of secondary awards from regional and international economic and business competitions, up to this point, Bui Thi Minh Huyen, a student of class 12D - Dien Chau 3 High School, has received admission notices from 4 leading universities in the country, namely Foreign Trade University, Diplomatic Academy, National Economics University and a scholarship of more than 70% from an international university worth more than 2 billion VND.
The admission notices came to Huyen about 2 weeks before she took the High School Graduation Exam. Huyen herself was not too surprised by this result, because she had prepared quite carefully with many options to register for direct admission.
Not only Huyen, up to this point, in class 12D, there have been more than 15 students announced to be admitted to universities at home and abroad by considering university results or foreign language certificates. Teacher Chu Thuy Binh - the homeroom teacher of the class said: In the past few years, the university admission scores have been very high. Therefore, we all determined that if we use the graduation exam results for admission, it will be very difficult. This year in particular, the opportunity may be more difficult, because with the 2023 exam, getting a score of 8 or higher will not be easy. To increase the chance of admission, students have many other opportunities for admission such as taking the results of their transcripts, foreign language certificates or the results of competency assessment exams.

Student Nguyen Danh Dung - class 12A1, Kim Lien High School (Nam Dan) this year used 4 university admission methods at the same time and 3 universities have announced admission. Accordingly, he used the result with a score of 968/1200 of the Ho Chi Minh National University's Competency Assessment Test to be admitted to the Foreign Trade University and the National Economics University. In addition, Dung used the results of his high school transcript and the second prize in the provincial excellent student in Mathematics to consider the talent system to be admitted to the Electronics and Telecommunications major - Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Currently, with a score of 71/100 on the competency assessment test and waiting for the high school graduation exam score, Dung is hoping to be admitted to the Information Technology major also at the University of Science and Technology.
Reduce quota for candidates taking graduation exam results
The high school graduation exam is used to recognize graduation and obtain admission results for universities. However, in reality, the number of candidates taking the exam and using this method to apply for admission to universities is not as high as before. Explaining this, many teachers said that there are two reasons, the first is because there are many opportunities and many different methods for candidates to apply for admission to universities.
Meanwhile, the chance of being admitted by the graduation exam results is not much because schools “tighten” the quota for this method. Moreover, the admission score is too high when in recent years, admitted students often have to score over 27, 28 points to have a chance of being admitted to top schools.

The fact that schools reserve few quotas for candidates who are admitted based on their high school graduation exam results makes the race to enter universities, especially the top schools, more difficult. However, in this race, the hardest part falls on students in disadvantaged areas, far from the center when they do not have many conditions to take the ability assessment exams, foreign language certificate exams. Moreover, their learning conditions are also more disadvantaged than those of candidates in favorable areas...
With the current trend, many people are also starting to question whether it is necessary to organize a high school graduation exam because the main purpose now is mainly to consider graduation recognition. Instead, there should be a separate exam for students who wish to apply to universities, avoiding the situation of having too many exams organized by schools themselves, causing senior students to have to compete at the same time, which is tiring, stressful, and costly with many exams like today.
